BEST OF 2011 : YOUR SAY

Alright then! We've rabbited on long and hard over the past ten days or so, gabbling on aimlessly about which tracks floated our pop boat throughout the course of 2011.
But there's no doubt in our fragile little minds that there was probably a whole procession of pop that we've missed out on mentioning and that there may be some completely overwhelming bubble of anger and resentment towards us gurgling up inside you for not mentioning your special track(s).
So here's your chance! What are YOUR picks for the top ten pop songs of 2011!? 'Cause we'd love for you to share with us! Yes, you!
Head straight to the comments section below, do not pass 'go' and do not collect $200. But impart your wisdom and your choices upon us freely.
We'll look at compiling a top ten list of the collective tops tens and perhaps put it to a public vote sometime later in January to work out just which track was the best of 2011 - as voted by YOU!
So get commentin'!! And we'll get compilin'!

BEST OF 2011 : No.01

So so torn. Emeli Sande's 'Heaven' was insanely glorious - and as we've mentioned previously, it was in and out of our top spot on several occasions across the past few weeks. It is utterly superb and will forever be among our favourites. But then so too will this incredible single. And we guess what tipped this one over the edge and into the No.01 position for us was the fact that not only is the track truly extraordinary, but the artist who created it is a superstar - and a homegrown one at that.
Dropped just a few months back and performed sublimely on Australia's version of 'The X Factor', Darren Hayes' 'Bloodstained Heart' took our breath away - and still does. A song about standing by someone, no matter the personal cost, the tale of eternal and uncompromising love is narrated with care, honesty and class by Mister Hayes, his faultless vocal and bewildering falsetto.
It's crafted beautifully, vocally building from the care, softness and vulnerability of the first verse to the sincerity, intent and power of the final chorus, which in turn is further enhanced by the epic production of Mister Falk, who guides the song into modern day classic territory. 'Bloodstained Heart' is an unequivocal stunner.
So ladies and gents, pop gods and goddesses, presenting our No.01 Pop Single Of 2011... Darren Hayes' 'Bloodstained Heart'. Proof, we suppose, that auspOp is where the good guys always win...

BEST OF 2011 : Honourable Mentions

Before we get to our No.01 Pop Single Of The Year tomorrow (any guesses as to what it might be??), we're here to present some of our other favourite moments of the pop year 2011.
It was a relatively quiet start to the pop year with highlights few and far between, but here are the other tracks we thought sparkled throughout the year (in no particular order)...
Chris Martin and co struggled to gain traction with 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', the first single from their latest album 'Mylo Xyloto', but it's the album's second single that did the trick for the British supergroup - epic strings, soaring vocals and a catchy chorus all combining to ensure the band would spend the latter weeks of the pop year with a top ten, platinum-selling hit on their hands. Just try playing the song once and not walking away without humming along to that ol' familiar 'Para-Para-Paradise' or not falling in love with the elephant making his way to South Africa in the official video. Epic.
Former American Idol songstress Kelly Clarkson returned to our charts earlier this year with a track that, with a little help from an X Factor performance locally, saw her bag her first ever No.1 hit in Australia. The track has since sold double platinum down under (more than 140,000 copies sold) and things are also looking good for her next single 'Stronger', which continues to climb the charts. 'Mr Know It All' was a feisty mid-tempo pop track that lyrically had Kel dissing a controlling influence in her life. We loved it - and it seems that many other Aussie pop lovers did too!
Making her way across the Tasman with all the sexiness, style and swagger that we've come to love, New Zealand songstress and former Bionic Pixie Zowie hit the ground running with her delicious, punchy, electro-pop single 'Bite Back', which hit local media back in January. And although the single failed to fire on the local charts, we can't help but think that the pulsating single signalled the beginning of something altogether wonderful for young Zowie. No doubt only time will tell.
They're now on a new label, but that new label did nothing with the brand new Sugababes track 'Freedom' here in Australia this year. Released back in September in Britain, 'Freedom' was made available as a free download from Amazon and fans snapped it up. It was the band's first new material in 18 months and fans had been waiting patiently. We weren't disappointed. To us, the track was the most 'Sugababey' the Sugababes had sounded in years, sexing it up with the new line-up of Amelle, Heidi and Jade. Hopefully Sony Australia will get their Sugababes action on in 2012.
There's no denying the impact this young lady had on our charts throughout the course of the year. Australian radio virtually turned its nose up at Jessie J's first single 'Do It Like A Dude', but by the time the Logies rolled around back in May, her follow-up single 'Price Tag' ensured that pretty much the entire television industry knew every word. 'Price Tag' had the hook, the style and the sass to make it big all over the world and it peaked at No.2 on the ARIA singles chart, going on to earn a four times platinum accreditation for sales of more than 280,000 copies. But it's not about the money (money money).
How this young man isn't signed to a major label is completely beyond us. After giving away his debut album '8 Bit Heart' early last year, 25 year old US pop star Simon Curtis returned in 2011 with his second independent release entitled 'R∆'. The second single from the album was the electro-pop genius of 'Flesh'. A punchy synth-filled production with Simon's falsetto plastered all over the chorus, it starts off as a sexy mid-tempo number before exploding into a dancefloor ready gem at the 2:46 mark. Classy, Mister Curtis. Very classy.
Hitting in the middle of the year and spurred along by a live performance on 'The Voice' (on which both Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera were judges), 'Moves Like Jagger' was a megahit. Going on to sell around half a million copies locally, the track was the first top ten Aussie hit for Christina Aguilera since 2007's 'Candyman' and the first top five placing for Maroon 5 since 2004's 'She Will Be Loved'. It was an instant dance/pop classic, with Levine singing about impressing a girl with his dance 'moves like Jagger'. Seven times platinum and a whole lotta fun.
She'd originally offered this track to Kylie Minogue for her 'Aphrodite' project, but after Kylie rejected it for the other 'Put Your Hands Up' (written by Aussie duo Nervo), Nerina decided to keep it for herself and release it as the lead single from her album 'Year Of The Wolf'. Nerina's smoky vocals suited this track perfectly - an indie/pop nugget with a wistfully sublime chorus that burrowed its way into our hearts. As fresh as a summer's breeze and full of pure pop class, Nerina's 'Put Your Hands Up' was easily one of the year's best.
Any wonder why Beyonce scored some Aussie chart love with her single 'Love On Top' this year - it was fabulous. The singer chose to premiere the official video to Australia first and we here at auspOp were the first in the world with the official cover image. A platinum selling top 20 hit down under, the track harked back to the days of Motown, with simple, feel-good melodies, soulful vocals and not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR chord changes to keep things interesting. Beyonce's pretty classy most of the time, but this was old school and we loved it.
You didn't think we'd make it through a 'favourite tracks' countdown and not include at least one Take That song, did you? Lifted from the soundtrack of the latest film in the 'X Men' series, 'Love Love' also served as the lead single from the band's repackaged 'Progress' album. A thumping mid-tempo Stuart Price-produced electro-pop number, the track featured Gary back on lead vocals after he'd taken a vocal back seat somewhat on the original album. We loved the punchiness of this track, along with the falsetto used solely on the 'Love Love' lyric.
We really have to tip our hat to this track; officially one of the biggest homegrown singles in Australian chart history. The 'Somebody That I Used To Know' success story was borne from radio play on Triple J, which sent it soaring onto the mainstream music charts, which in turn meant that it had to be added to 'hit music station' playlists, given it was a hit and all. Mainstream success, half a million sales and a couple of ARIAs later, the track remains lodged in the Aussie top 20 and is a bonafide smash. Coupling stunning vocal performances from both Gotye and Kimbra, 'Somebody That I Used To Know' is the runaway favourite to take out the 2012 Triple J Hottest 100.
It's official. We like dance/pop Kelly more than we like urban/R&B Kelly. Fresh from her appearance in our top ten singles of 2010 (that would be 'Commander' with David Guetta), Kelly returned to our smash radar this year with the assistance of another DJ - Italian supremo Alex Gaudino. The twosome worked their magic into a hands-in-the-air club stomper that had us dancing up a storm upon its March release. Though success eluded them here in Australia, the track was a huge hit in the UK, where it peaked inside the country's top ten.
Look, we've been less than forthcoming with our praise of Ms Germanotta throughout the course of the year, but when she took us to 'The Edge Of Glory', we couldn't help but sit up and take note. This was Gaga doing what she did best - a track that wasn't particularly overhyped, but seemed to succeed on its own merits through its '80s Bonnie Tyler-esque rock vibe and Gaga's undeniably strong vocal. Yes, we admittedly started suffering from Gaga fatigue throughout the course of 2011, but we'll be watching with great interest to see what musical moves she makes next.
We love ourselves a bit of Washington here at auspOp, especially when she comes up with something as alluring and sexy as 'Holy Moses'. Coupled with its Fossey-inspired video clip; Megan resplendent in a flame red sequinned number and plenty of silhouetted imagery, 'Holy Moses' cast its spell on us big time - so much so that it almost ended up in our top ten. It's a crying shame that the single didn't make it at least into the top 50 because it was classy, punchy independent pop that begged for attention. You're a class act, Ms Megan.
Right, so across the course of the year, we've been inundated by hundreds of soulless dance/pop tracks that all sounded the same. Even The Potbelleez had to create a track that sounded like everything else just to get airplay. Stan Walker was in on the action too, but there was something about his single 'Loud' that was a little different to all the others - a little soul. There's no denying that Stan's voice is an extraordinary gift - capable of reaching some almost inhuman heights. It was the chorus of 'Loud' that got stuck in our heads, as it did for a number of people across the country. It was Stan's second ever top ten hit and a platinum selling smash.
Aaah Britney. With a career now spanning 13 years, Brit can be a little hit and miss at times, but the girl still knows how to pull a crowd. And though she may never step foot on Aussie soil again after her last tour and the scathing reviews she received, it's comforting to know that we still give her a little chart love every now and again. 'Till The World Ends' was a prime example. It was a top ten double platinum smash here in Australia and if the Mayans' prediction of a cataclysmic event that would bring about the end of the world late next year are correct, we'll at very least have a song to celebrate it.
She may have had a little bit of chart success here in Australia via her appearance on LMFAO's hit 'Champagne Showers', but apart from that, British singer songwriter Natalia Kills is pretty much an unknown quantity here in Australia. Which is a crying shame, because we reckon her music would have gone down ever so well here. 'Wonderland' was Natalia's first single of the year over in Europe and although it didn't perform particularly well anywhere, we still think it's a pretty solid pop song. We're hoping for a lot more Natalia love in 2012, but in the meantime, you can check out her album, which was given a hush-hush release onto our iTunes store back in September.
And finally 2011 was an awfully good year for New Zealand songstress Kimbra, who's now calling Australia home. Her first single for the year was the sublime 'Cameo Lover'. It was summer-fresh, bright and effortlessly fun, paving the way for her album 'Vows', which was to conquer the Aussie top five on its release late this year. Combining the success of 'Vows' and her featured performance on the biggest selling Aussie single of the year (of many years) 'Somebody That I Used To Know', 2011 was a year that Kimbra won us all over with her amazing talent.

BEST OF 2011 : No.02

To say this was a difficult decision is a total understatement, because we frickin' adore this song. We'd had it the No.1 position at different stages while compiling the list of our top ten singles of 2011, but 'Heaven' has settled for the No.2 spot. Emeli Sande's debut was an absolute stunner and introduced us to (for us) the year's most exciting new artist.
Sweeping strings rest seamlessly atop a cacophony of drum 'n' bass beats, before Emeli chimes in with that timeless, gloriously soulful voice. The thing we like most about 'Heaven', however, is that it continues to build, the strings and vocals soar before 'Heaven' topples softly into the bridge. But just when you think it's all over, it then it bursts into bloom again with more chorus, a full gospel-style choir and more amazing vocals from our leading lady.
A spectacular debut and we can't wait for Emeli's debut album 'Our Version Of Events', due early in the new year.
Sheer, immaculate brilliance.
Yes, our No.02 Pop Single Of The Year for 2011 is Emeli Sande's 'Heaven'.

BEST OF 2011 : No.03

We were a little undecided as to whether this track deserved to be sitting ahead of Adele's stunning 'Someone Like You' in our Single Of The Year countdown for 2011. And we don't know whether or not it was because the lyrical content really spoke to us personally across the course of the year, but we had to face facts - Nicole Scherzinger's 'Don't Hold Your Breath' is (and will always be) a cracking good pop song and deserves to be this high in the countdown.
From the get-go, the song utilises its insanely catchy chorus to sucker you right in, before Nicole starts telling the story of a love who's done her wrong, discovering her inner strength, getting a little angry with how she was treated and slowly but surely getting back on her feet again. It's a tale for the ages, with awesome arrangement and composition by Messrs Falk, Josefsson and Rami who keep things interesting with a contrasting bridge, before that dangerously addictive chorus kicks in again 'til close. It's an awesome, awesome pop track.
Yes indeedy, she's bagged No.03 on our Single Of The Year countdown - her name is Nicole (Scherzinger) and her single is 'Don't Hold Your Breath'.

NEWS WRAP

• Lady Gaga has given all her dedicated little 'Monsters' a little festive treat - a brand new song entitled 'Stuck On Fuckin' You' (pictured). Gaga has told her fans that she wrote the track on the bus during her Monster Ball tour and that it was recorded in one shot. Check it out HERE.
• New York DJ and producer Pete Rock has added a second date in Melbourne to his forthcoming Aussie tour schedule. Pete will now play Melbourne's Laundry Bar on January 01 and 02, Sydney's Upstairs Beresford on January 05, Brisbane's Alhambra Lounge on January 06 and The Villa in Perth on January 07.
• Pete Rock's not the only one selling out shows in Melbourne, with Kitty, Daisy & Lewis also announcing a new show in the Victorian capital. After selling out the Corner Hotel on January 27, the trio will now hit the Esplanade Hotel on January 28.
• Founder of Shock Records, David Williams, has stepped down from his role as the company's CEO. He leaves the post after 24 long years saying, "I’d like to thank the many, many people who have contributed to Shock’s success, and the Australian record and DVD buying public who have put up with our shenanigans over the last 24 years. I’ve very proud of what we’ve achieved together." Executive General Manager Scot Crawford takes over the role.
• Australia's Got Talent judge Brian McFadden is pushing ahead with his music career, with the singer close to releasing the official video to a brand new single called 'Wrap My Arms' (cover image pictured). It'll be his first new music since his double a-side 'Come Party" and "That's How Life Goes', which was released earlier this year.
• Bachelor Girl frontwoman Tania Doko has announced a series of solo shows in both New South Wales and Victoria early in the new year. She kicks things off at 34 Degrees South in Bondi on February 08 before moving on to the Brass Monkey in Cronulla on the 9th, Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba on the 10th and the Burning Log in Dural on the 11th. In Victoria, she'll play Bennetts Lane in Melbourne on Feb 22, The National in Geelong on Feb 23, The Palais in Hepburn Springs on Feb 24 and the Wesley Anne in Northcote on February 25.
• And X Factor star Reece Mastin has lost his grip on the No.1 spot on iTunes with his single 'Good Night'. LMFAO's 'Sexy & I Know It' has overtaken him to place at No.1, with Taio Cruz and One Direction both surging. Adam Lambert's new single 'Better Than I Know Myself' has seemingly stalled, dropping out of the top 100.
• Three tracks made a concerted effort to smash the British Christmas No.1 yesterday. One of them was a re-release of Lou Monte's 1960 Christmas track 'Dominick The Donkey', which smashed into the top 100 to place at No.03, another was X Factor winners Little Mix, who hoped to hold onto their No.1 position for a second week with their winner's song 'Cannonball'. And the third was a charity record by a TV competition choir called Military Wives and their choirmaster Gareth Malone. It was the latter who snatched the No.1 spot, bagging more than 550,000 sales of their track in the week; in the process outselling the rest of the top ten combined. Alex Day's 'Forever Yours' was the highest debut of the week, coming in behind the battle at No.4, while a campaign to get Nirvana's classic 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' to the top spot failed - it had to settle for No.11.
• On the UK albums chart, meanwhile, Michael Buble continued his festive reign with his 'Christmas' LP, while the rest of the top ten stayed pretty stagnant. Take That's 'Progress Live' improved six spots to No.12.
• In the United States, Rihanna clocks up her longest running No.1 single with 'We Found Love'. An eighth week on top for the Calvin Harris produced track means she's beaten the record set with both 'Umbrella' and 'Love The Way You Lie' (with Eminem). It's also 2011's longest running No.1 in the US, edging out Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep'. Adele's 'Set Fire To The Rain', meanwhile, is moving up in a hurry - No.21 last week and No.13 this week.
• And on the Billboard 200 album chart, the Christmas No.1 belongs to... Yep, you guessed it... Michael Buble. Adele edged a little higher to No.2 and Justin Bieber's 'Under The Mistletoe' edged a little higher to No.3, while Lady Antebellum rushes back into the top ten with their album 'Own The Night' at No.05.

BEST OF 2011 : No.04

There are very few songs that hit the charts throughout the course of 2011 that are so instantly recognisable, so breathtakingly beautiful as Adele's 'Someone Like You'. While a good slice of Adele's chart contemporaries were banging on aimlessly about being in the club, dancing in the club, getting down in the club or owning the club, Adele, without fanfare, won our hearts with her simple, heartfelt songs, the most stunning of which is undoubtedly 'Someone Like You'. Though yes, the single was in very real danger of suffering over-exposure via any and every TV talent competition globally, Adele's original version was unassailable - and strangely, people actually bought it - and the album it came from; '21'.
A heart-wrenchingly pained track about a love lost, a bittersweet goodbye and being trapped in that void between turning your back to face the future and not being able to move on.
Yes, it was everywhere, but in the case of this track, that's no bad thing.
Our No.04 Single Of The Year for 2011 is Adele's 'Someone Like You'.

JESSIE J : Domino

When we first published back in August that Jessie J's new single was called 'Domino', we were swamped with people accusing us of giving them false information and publishing rumours. Rumours aren't what we're about here at auspOp - most of our stuff comes direct from official sources and we're usually among the first to get the word out (hello Kelly Clarkson 'Stronger' single cover).
But we digress. The British singer (Jessie J, that is, not Kelly Clarkson) has chosen Boxing Day to reveal the official video to the single 'Domino' and here it is, late on your Monday night, for your viewing pleasure.
It opens with the singer in front of a wall of moving circular images (rather freaky actually) before she dons a rather fetching printed lycra bodysuit. There's some more freaky wallpaper, a gorgeous sequinned mask, a red wig with some oversized letters, some pyjamas, more colour, more outfits... they just keep coming. It's like a four minute advertisement for a swanky department store. Colour and movement, kids. Colour and movement. Likey.

BEST OF 2011 : No.05

The original Pop Idol winner over in the UK and in our humble opinion, still the very best. Will Young always seems to come up with the goods when it comes to producing quality pop records and his 2011 album 'Echoes' was most certainly no exception, brimming with polished dance/pop treasures with interesting, honest and raw lyrics. Lead single 'Jealousy' was a corker.
Combining slick production and beefy beats with Will's extraordinarily tender vocals about a tale of - you guessed it - jealousy; all topped with a clip revolving around trapeze. But who's Will jealous of? The guy or the girl? He leaves us guessing, of course. 'Cause that's just how he rolls.
Emotional, forthright and artistic, 'Jealousy' is pure class from an artist who can do no wrong.
Ladies and gents, it's our No.05 Pop Single Of The Year; Will Young's 'Jealousy'.

LOOKBACK

WHAM! : Last Christmas

In the classic Christmas song stakes, there doesn't come much bigger and more iconic than Wham!'s 1984 stunner 'Last Christmas'. Since covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Crazy Frog, Billie Piper to Ashley Tisdale, Whigfield, Alcazar, Atomic Kitten and this year by Joe McElderry, the track is a staple of the festive season each year.
The clip follows a group of friends, spending their Christmas in a log cabin, high upon the snowy slopes, enjoying each others company at dinner, throwing snowballs, popping up the Christmas tree, while George pines (not an arbour analogy) for his lost love. Aww.
Merry Christmas to you! Pop a cracker for us!

CHRISTMAS CHART WATCH

Okay, so the Christmas No.1 might not mean quite as much here in Australia as it does in, say the UK, but there'll still be plenty of celebrating for two male artists - and one of them's a local!

SINGLES
Reece Mastin holds firm in the No.1 spot for another week with his debut single 'Good Night'. But it's not all bad news for LMFAO in No.2, with their single 'Sexy And I Know It' now hitting the magical five times platinum mark for sales of more than 350,000 copies.
Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Bruno Mars make a big splash into the top ten. Their single 'Young, Wild & Free' making up six spots this week to land at No.5, achieving platinum accreditation in the process.
Also earning the pointy accreditation (70,000 sales) this week are Guy Sebastian with his single 'Don't Worry Be Happy' and Ed Sheeran's 'The A Team' which notches up double platinum.
One Direction fans will be excited to learn that their track 'What Makes You Beautiful' has made up two spots and is now back in the top ten at No.10.
Rihanna and Calvin (down to No.11) are up to quadruple platinum, Jason Derulo's 'Breathing' goes platinum and Christina Perri's 'A Thousand Years' earns a gold accreditation for sales of 35,000 copies.
Dropping to No.16 this week is Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's 'Moves Like Jagger', but it too gains another triangle - now seven times platinum (490,000 copies).
David Guetta and Nicki Minaj's 'Turn Me On' rockets up to No.17, beating the track's original peak of No.35 earlier in the year, while Timomatic and Bruno Mars also hit the top 20 (at Nos 18 and 19 respectively).
LMFAO's all-conquering 'Party Rock Anthem' gets another platinum accreditation, taking it to ten - it's now bagged in excess of 700,000 sales in Australia. Bruno Mars' 'It Will Rain' also gets the platinum nod.
Kelly Clarkson's new single 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' improves ten spots on last week and is now inside the top 30, Matt Corby's up two more spots to No.31 and Rihanna's 'You Da One' is down from No.26 to No.37.
Beliebers are out in force, snapping up his festive fare 'Mistletoe', allowing it back into the top 50 at No.41, Drake & Rihanna take 'Take Care' to No.43 and Laurent Wery's 'Hey Hey Hey' is up to No.45.
Outside the top 50, Simple Plan's 'Summer Paradise' debuts at No.51, Jason Derulo's 'It Girl', though falling eight spots to No.53, notches up triple platinum accreditation and Pitbull's 'International Love' is heading back up - now at No.55.
Flo Rida's Sia-featuring track 'Wild Ones' debuts at No.70, LMFAO's 'Sorry For Party Rocking' re-enters at No.72, Professor Green and Emeli Sande's 'Read All About It' moves up 13 spaces and John Lennon's classic 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' jumps back into the top 100 at No.79.
Indie artist Alex Day premieres at No.85 with 'Forever Yours', there are a couple of seasonal debuts for Michael Buble ('It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas' at No.89 and 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' at No.98) and Chiddy Bang's 'Ray Charles' debuts at No.100.

ALBUMS
As reported this week on the site, the team from Warner has updated the Michael Buble 'Christmas' album sales - it's now the highest selling Christmas album in Australian chart history and has been given a five times platinum accreditation (for sales into store of more than 350,000 copies).
Though she couldn't quite match the sales success of the 'Bubes, Adele managed to claw one more spot, with her ten-times-platinum album '21' moving up to No.2, leaving Reece Mastin to fall to No.3.
Nickelback's 'Here And Now' gets a platinum accreditation at No.7, while Tony Bennett and Bruno Mars add another to their respective totals.
Amy Winehouse's 'Lioness' drops to No.13 but picks up gold accreditation (35,000 copies) and Gotye's 'Making Mirrors' is up to No.14.
Further down, some of the more traditional Christmas fare improves greatly, including Mark Vincent's 'Songs From The Heart' (up from No.53 to No.29), Frank Sinatra's 'Best Of The Best' (No.52 to No.36), Michael Crawford's 'The Story Of My Life' (No.58 to No.40) and Michael Buble's 'Collection' (up from No.63 to a new peak of No.43).
Beyonce's '4' tips over one spot and makes it to No.50 in Christmas week.
Outside the top 50, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra debuts at No.59 with 'A Brandenburg Christmas', The Beatles' '1' is back in the top 100 mix at No.79, She & Him's 'A Very She & Him Christmas' debuts at No.91 and there are re-entries for Kate Bush's '50 Words For Snow' (No.93) and Nirvana's 'Nevermind' (No.97).
Chris Tomlin's 'Glory In The Highest' (No.48 last week) is completely out of the top 100, the biggest drop on singles OR albums chart this week.

BEST OF 2011 : No.06

A relative latecomer to official proceedings this year, this brand new single got us grooving in late November when the official clip was revealed to the world.
A brand new track lifted from the platinum edition of his album 'The Lady Killer', Cee Lo Green's 'Anyway' is a massive hit in waiting - a track we believe is actually stronger than his top ten smash 'F*@k You'.
'Anyway' builds and builds, with cheeky lyrics about Cee Lo's unassailable love, some awesome falsetto, great dancers in the clip and a feel-good vibe that's just ripe for those long drives down to the beach at the height of summer.
Given the right push and a whole heap of radio play early in the new year, 'Anyway's a bonafide hit-in-waiting; potentially one of the biggest tracks of the summer.
Pop lads and ladettes, presenting our No.06 Pop Single Of The Year... Cee Lo Green's 'Anyway'.

RIHANNA : You Da One

Rihanna's dropped the video for her brand new single 'You Da One', which is currently sitting just inside the top 40 on the Aussie iTunes chart. Unlike previous singles, it's not rocketed immediately to the top of the charts here in Australia, which suggests that either we as a nation don't like it or it's a grower.
No doubt the official clip will help its fortunes.
It's essentially relatively simple, filmed in black and white with a selection of set-ups, Rihanna sporting a variety of different outfits and wigs, there's some clever use of lighting for Ri to writhe around on the floor to and she spends an awfully good slice of the clip with her hand firmly on her vixen toilet parts.
But the big props in this one really have to go to post-production; those digital geniuses who've made the clip interesting with all their canny treatments over the top. As for the song itself... Meh, it's by no means our favourite of the last six months.

To be fair, we've been less than glowing in our reviews of a number of David Guetta's more recent offerings, given his formulaic reliance on pretty much any and every rap artist to appear on his singles across the past couple of years in the hope of hitting the charts globally.
But there was one track on his most recent album 'Nothing But The Beat' that immediately caught our ear - as well as the ear of a lot of the Aussie record-buying public. It was the Sia-vocalled track 'Titanium'.
Sure, though David originally had Mary J Blige to record the vocals, it was Adelaide's hometown girl Sia who got the official call-up and in our opinion it was the right call as hers is vocally flawless.
A song about insurmountable strength, Sia delivers the right combination of warmth, emotion, pitch and cracking strength, while David's pulsing beats kick in over the chorus. Credit where it's due to Mister Guetta, this is a corking good dance/pop track - and deserving of its triple platinum status in Australia. And they must have known we were honouring it - they revealed the official video (below) just three days ago!
Presenting our Pop Single Of The Year No.07... David Guetta ftg. Sia and 'Titanium'.

MELANIE HAS THE AMERICAN X

Expect to be hearing a lot more about 19 year old songstress Melanie Amaro (pictured, left) in the years ahead, as the Florida-born singer took out the inaugural US season of global talent search The X Factor.
Mentored by the show's creator Simon Cowell and lauded for her powerhouse vocal performances by other judges LA Reid, Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul, the singer had earlier been booted out of the competition, but was offered a wild card entry by Cowell, who admitted he'd made a grave mistake by omitting her from the top 16.
Melanie performed a cover of Beyonce's Dreamgirls track 'Listen' during the show's run, which prompted Simon to comment, "When I was asked by a lot of people why I was bringing this show to America, it was because I hoped that we were going to find someone like you." She performed the song again as part of the finale show and will release it as her first single and has picked up a $5 million recording contract.
Check out her grand final performance below;

'Clubbers Guide To 2012' will be released on Friday January 20, 2012.

BEST OF 2011 : No.08

Right-o, so the team at Sony Music sent us a little burn of a four track promo from Gypsy & The Cat about a year and a half ago and we were immediately taken by how timeless and classic the songs sounded.
'Jona Vark' is no exception. Following in the footsteps of the game-changing, jaw-dropping amazingness of Empire Of The Sun a few years ago, Xavier and Lionel set about setting their own course towards musical superstardom and after popping out their debut album 'Gilgamesh' late last year, back in March they furnished us with this - the third single 'Jona Vark'.
Sonically, it harked back to Fleetwood Mac's '80s classic 'Seven Wonders'; layerings of lush vocals, clever chord combinations and lyrics dealing with personal freedom and enlightenment, creating a sublime, slick and polished single that goes down in our books as one of the year's best. It's seriously classy pop.
And anyone who saw the boys captivate live arena audiences this year during their support slot on Kylie's 'Aphrodite' tour would have known in their throbbing, pulsing hearts that Xavier and Lionel have one big, bright future ahead.
Ladies and gents, it's No.08 on our Pop Single Of The Year for 2011 countdown, Gypsy & The Cat's 'Jona Vark'.

BIG DAY'S NEW HOME IN PERTH

It's all over red rover for the Claremont Showgrounds in Perth for next year's Big Day Out, with organisers confirming late yesterday that they've secured a new home in the West Australian capital - McCallum Park in Victoria Park, just across the river from the Perth CBD.
Big Day Out's local representative Ken Knight moved quickly to assure local residents that organisers will do everything within their power to appease the concerns of local residents.
"In conjunction with the town of Victoria Park we are working through the final details so the Big Day Out will continue to deliver the highest quality and safest festival in Australia," he said in a statement. "This process will also ensure that every appropriate measure is taken to minimize the impact of the event on the local environment. We are very excited about the changes and are looking forward to the best Big Day Out ever."
BDO organiser Ken West, meanwhile, was glowing in his praise of the new venue.
"We now have a truly beautiful site, centrally located with grass and ample trees plus the Swan River and city skyline as the backdrop," he said. "This is a new beginning for us and combining some of the world’s great bands with a this beautiful location, we know this will be an incredible show. We would like to thank the Town Of Victoria Park for their support of the Big Day Out. It’s going to be fun!"
