TOP POP 2010 : NO.01

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing our No.1 pop song of 2010. Theo and Adam from Manchester duo Hurts burst onto the scene earlier this year with their rather brilliant debut single 'Better Than Love'. With its thundering beats and electronic instrumentation, it harked back to the heady days of the 1980s British pop scene when bands like OMD, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys were all the rage.
But it was the follow-up that took our breath away. Telling the story of a man hell-bent on ending his life being saved by a woman called Suzie, the track employed the subtle tick of a metronome as percussion, before Theo popped in with some fragile vocals to tell the tale. Then... that glorious chorus.
The clip was stylishly minimalist too, with a quartet of dancers trying their hand at synchronised swimming and Theo looking pensive by the pool.
But ultimately, it was the A grade instrumentation coupled with a fab melody and a great story that turned a song that spoke of love, optimism hope into one of the classiest and most engaging pop songs we've heard for years.
Brilliance. It really is a 'Wonderful Life'.

ENRIQUE IGLESIAS : Tonight (I'm Loving You)

Universal Music may still be working 'Heartbeat' at local radio, but we'll bet our bottom dollar that it won't be too far into the new year before we see the third English language single from Enrique Iglesias' album 'Euphoria' doing the radio rounds. 'Tonight (I'm Loving You)' features a guest appearance by man of the moment Ludacris (he's everywhere) and the clip features a very sweaty looking Enrique (the way we like him) perusing the goods on offer at what appears to be either a nightclub or a gentlemen's club. Of course, he finds the one he wants to take home, there's a Ludacris interlude in the limo and some of the screen shots seem to contain imagery that could be construed as being a little too saucy for a G rated clip. More of the same electro R&B pop, but we'll lap it up for the time being.

WHO'S OFF TO ARMIN THEN!?

Well we sprung this one on your right in the middle of the festive season - smack bang between your Christmas plum puds and the new years champagne - and it was only live for a few days too.
One lucky son of a gun is about to trek off to Melbourne's Etihad Stadium this new years eve to see in 2011 in style, basking in the brilliance of the world's No.1 DJ Armin van Buuren - and it's all thanks to the new mobile app called Flowd, which the DJ is using.
As we made mention at the launch of the comp, "Flowd allows fans to follow their favourite artists, receive updates on the latest news and gigs, see exclusive pictures, and even communicate directly with the artists themselves. A brand new feature has just launched that allows users to “check-in” to live shows and events to receive exclusive news, and be rewarded for their attendance."
So... the winner of the double pass to Armin van Buuren's 'Armin Only' concert at Etihad Stadium is... Michael from Ascot Vale in Victoria (insert wild crowd applause noise here).

Congratulations Michael! And thanks to all who entered the competition!

KERI HILSON : The Way You Love Me

We haven't even had a minute to get our ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ on and Keri Hilson is already back with another eye-popping new video.
The ferocious Polow Da Don (producer behind Fergie's 'London Bridge') track is the third single lifted from Keri's forthcoming No Boys Allowed album but if you’ve choked on smoke billowing this way, it’s got nothing to do with the song. It’s all about this sizzling video and miss thang sweating everything God gave her.
Apparently all this air humping and not much clothing is a shock to urban music observers who have always perceived Ms Hilson as the one representing the classy broads. Calls of sell out or not, Keri‘s body looks absolutely banging and the saucy choreography is enviable. The video also features guest appearances from JoJo, Faith Evans and former Danity Kane member, Dawn Richard.
‘The Way You Love Me’ has no Australian release date set yet. Fingers crossed Australian radio will be treated to her delicious previous single 'Pretty Girl Rock' first. Keri Hilson's sophomore album 'No Boys Allowed' is available digitally now. DL

TOP POP 2010 : HONOURABLE MENTIONS

2010 was a pretty amazing year for pop music - there was so many glittering highlights in amongst the generic crossover blend of US R&B and dance that was championed by the likes of Usher, Taio Cruz, Jason Derulo, Enrique Iglesias - and even Brian McFadden.
But with the exception of one really big hit in our list of honourable mentions on the pop roll call of 2010, none of them got much love in Australia despite their amazingness - and some of them haven't yet been released here. So before we announce our number one pop song of the year (that to come overnight tomorrow night), here (in no particular order) are 14 tunes that we thought shone throughout the year.

Why this song (and this singer) weren't huge in Australia is completely beyond our comprehension. Effortlessly stylish, exuding a new brand of coolness that would have seduced all those who basked in its amazingness had 'Tightrope' been given a chance to succeed. Even a (totally unnecessary) re-worked version
featuring Ludacris and B.o.B was spurned by our reactive radio networks. According to the grapevine, we don't think we've heard the last of Janelle in Australia, with a fresh push expected in the new year - and that's a very good thing indeed.

You know the pop is going to be good when it has the words 'Sophie Ellis Bextor' plastered all over the front of it. You know it's going to be something a little special when it has the names 'Wiltshire' and 'Small' in the production credits. Yes, the Freemasons once again teamed up with SEB in 2010 to amazing club-stomping perfection. And though only a minor hit here in Australia, it ticked all the boxes over in the UK and Europe, despite being leaked almost two months ahead of its retail release (when will UK record companies learn that this is just not permissible in this day and age?).

Katie Melua had painted herself into a corner with her very safe melodic balladry of days gone by. But she attempted something a little different with the lead single from her latest album 'The House', courtesy of some electro button pushing by none other than William Orbit. 'The Flood' (one of three pop singles released by the same name this year) took a left turn from middle Eastern inspired orchestration to lush beats, providing Katie with the perfect platform to showcase her diversity. That piano in the video - and that chorus. Magical stuff.

Though we might not have written too much about British rock outfit Muse throughout the course of the year, we're massive fans of their album 'The Resistance'. And the title track from it was altogether glorious, grand and epic. From its cantering percussion and piano beginning emerges Matthew's smooth vocals, before an almost Queen-esque bridge leads into a stadium rock chorus that sends tingles up the spine. Though not the strongest song on 'The Resistance', the single highlighted the reasons why Muse is one of the hottest rock acts on the planet. No wonder then that crowds packed into arenas across the country earlier this month to catch the band rocking it live.

Ellie Goulding first appeared on our radar in October last year thanks to the eagle ears of one of our loyal readers. But in 2010, Ellie released a super little track in her second single 'Starry Eyed'. Her voice almost folky, the production very electro, yet somehow they seemed to fuse effortlessly together to create a fresh new sound that left us completely spellbound. With one foot destined for the dancefloor and the other with its sights firmly set on radio airplay, 'Starry Eyed' was a delicious pop gem. Of course, as always for us Aussies it was light years ahead of its time and didn't really get a look-in, despite it being a top 30 hit across the Tasman.

It had been fifteen long years since they had recorded together as a five piece, but in 2010 Robbie Williams re-joined the ranks of Britain's hottest boy band, Take That. Though 'The Flood' didn't hit the top spot in the UK, held out by Rihanna's monster 'Only Girl (In The World)', it was track one on the fastest selling British album of the century - 'Progress'. Produced by Stuart Price and featuring Robbie and Gary sharing the lead vocals, 'The Flood' was an epic piece of British pop. And where better to film the video for the track than on the most famous river in Britain - the mighty Thames. Could it be just us that gets a tingle down the spine when the shot pulls out on the London Eye?

We assume that no-one would seriously argue that 'All The Lovers' was the best single of Kylie Minogue's 20 plus year career - heck, production-wise it sounded more than a little like 'I Believe In You'. But it signalled the willingness of the pop princess to stick to where her strengths lie - in her dance/pop roots. With production dynamo Stuart Price on the case, there's no denying the track had a strong pedigree. But a lacklustre chart position saw Kylie head home for extensive promotional duties for the first time in 13 years. It was a slow burner though - getting stronger with each listen until it clicked - but when it did, the section of the song from 2:28 onwards took us to a whole new level of love.

Here's the one big Aussie hit in our pop honour role of 2010. There were those who wrote Katy off in the early days as a one-hit wonder with her super-hit 'I Kissed A Girl', but this year Katy Perry proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was no one trick pony. Her monster 'California Gurls' has already clocked over triple platinum sales since its release (it's currently a bee's dick off quadruple platinum). Subsequent singles 'Teenage Dream' and 'Firework' have also achieved sales success, but it was 'California Gurls' with its sweet-as-apple pie video clip and infectious disco-tinged chorus that had us hook, line and cream-filled brassiere guns.

We have to tip our hat to Lisa Mitchell this year. Normally we're not big fans of her folky style of pop, but in 2010, she totally wooed us with the super 'Oh! Hark!' It upped the tempo, bringing in some subtle percussion - and the video was wondrous, with its stark colours somehow providing a great deal of warmth. She looked great with her cropped fringe and smoky eyes, she sounded great - and 'Oh! Hark!' was for us the best Lisa single since 2008's 'Neopolitan Dreams'.

So the whole Damien Leith 'Remember June' project fell flat on its arse earlier this year. So what. Both 'To Get To You' and 'Forgive Forget' were cracking pop songs, just ripe for radio play. But sadly, that's where this project fell over, with radio on the whole stubbornly refusing to play the singles. Produced by the super Stuart Crichton, the album's second single 'Forgive Forget' was a big song with a big melody and a big chorus and caught our ear big time earlier in the year. A shame that it didn't work, because 'Forgive Forget' was a super pop song.

You can't have a good look back at pop 2010 without tipping your hat to Swedish superstar Robyn. She released not one, but three albums as part of her 'Body Talk' series, the first of which spawned this heartfelt dancefloor stomper that spoke of someone being cast off by a love interest in favour of someone else. 'Dancing On My Own' was the electro follow-up to her super smash 'With Every Heartbeat', with a tender bridge which stripped all instrumentation for full emotional effect. Robyn proves beyond doubt that Sweden's most certainly where pop's at. And that it's light years ahead.

As soon as it burst onto the scene, we knew that the lead single from Cee Lo Green's album 'The Lady Killer' was going to be a monster. Let's face it, any song that has the f bomb in the lyric is ripe for chart success. But it's this single from the album that had our soul appetite whetted late this year. 'Bright Lights Bigger City' took us straight onto the streets of New York City, blending synth stabs with a bassline that could have been ripped from MJ's 'Billie Jean' and that soulful vocal that would sooth and satisfy like rich toffee. We have the feeling that the story is far from over for this album - and that this single might just get a little local love in 2011.

Credit where it's due, in an age when most artists are cast asunder if they don't achieve instant top 20 success, Sony Music allowed Michael Paynter to spend a couple of years away to develop his style and his sound. And while we could have done without the bum fluff since his return, we were left awestruck by that staggering voice. 'Love The Fall' was the perfect comeback single for the Melbourne singer songwriter. It was epic pop/rock with a Veronicas cameo, plenty of grunt and it contained that incredible voice that soared to notes that no man should naturally be able to hit. No surprise then that it became the singer's first top 20 hit.

And we couldn't let our Honourable Mentions list go by without making mention of one of our favourite local discoveries of 2010. Sydney duo Aeons first hit the pages of auspOp in June this year, giving their single 'Where The Sky Meets The Sea' away as a free download. And they followed that up with the release of their 'Beyond The Satellites' EP (which they also gave away free - HERE). And we don't know whether it was 'Where The Sky Meets The Sea' or the poppier title track of their EP that had us hooked the most. They were both amazing, both with global-standard production creating an electrifying soundbed that was then layered with an almost nu-wave vocal. Yes it's hard to pick, but whichever way the decision falls, one pop truth remains... Aeons are totally and utterly friggin brilliant.

FREE ALICIA

Alicia Keys is still touched and astounded by her newfound motherhood and the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter is understandably gonna want to commit these feelings to song. Here on a track produced by her husband, Swizz Beatz, the young family presents to you a free download of ‘Speechless’ – Mama Keys' ode to baby Egypt.
The couple has also pulled Eve into the studio for a guest rap and frankly, we're a tad disappointed that there isn’t some sort of reference to ‘Gangsta Lovin’ (the pair’s last collabo back in 2002, which made #4 here in Australia). Hit play and have a listen:

Alicia has tweeted that ‘Speechless’ is just a freestyle track her and her husband are giving away as part of his Monster Monday weekly free music offer. The song won't be released as a single or included as a future album track.

Grab a free download of ‘Speechless’ HERE. DL

TOP POP 2010 : NO.02

Will the following people please take a bow... C. Johnson, M.S. Eriksen, T.E. Hermansen, S.Wilhelm and M. Storleer. Together, they created one of the most amazing pop anthems of not just this year, but of the last few years. Sure it took 'Only Girl (In The World)' a little while to really gel with us, but boy when it did, we realised fully that the lead single from Rihanna's latest long player 'Loud' was a complete and utter screamer.
And it seems the Aussie record buying public agreed - it's been a permanent fixture in our top ten since its release back in September.
A subtle verse structure leads into an altogether spectacular chorus section that just seems to build and build, as Rihanna turns on the diva power-vocals to jaw-dropping effect. And if all that aural goodness wasn't enough to send you into shimmering puddles of pop delight, the video (below) was divine, with subtle warm desert hues that were splashed with colour courtesy of poppies and oversized balloons. And the lake scene? Well that's just pure visual sex on a stick right there.
Could it be? You know it. It's our No.2 pop single of the year - and it's Rihanna's 'Only Girl (In The World)'.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.03

The stratospheric rise of this pop phenomenon throughout the last couple of years hit an incredible new high just over nine months ago when she revealed the video clip for her eighth single 'Telephone'.
After bursting onto our pop radar just two years earlier with the iconic 'Just Dance', Lady Gaga had been slowly ascending the ladder to megastardom.
But it wasn't just Gaga that made this single great. Oh no. With 'Telephone', you were getting two A grade popstars for the one price, with a bootylicious Beyonce thrown into the mix for good measure. And let's face it, we were all hooked on that 'eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh stop telephoning me' line - one of those stealthy little bundle of lyrics that buried its way under your skin like a botfly (don't Youtube it) and wouldn't let go.
But it was with the song's epic nine and a half minute video that Gaga really wriggled her way onto a pop pedestal far loftier than any of the other fluffy pretenders.
From an outfit made solely of police tape, the use of aluminium cans as hair accessories, cigarette eyewear, a nod to those hermaphrodite rumours, the re-appearance of The Pussy Wagon and many other clever pop culture references (some of which went waaay over our heads), the Jonas Akerlund-producer masterpiece was one of the most talked about and most viewed videos of the year. The view counter on the official clean version alone stands at close to 100 million, while the explicit version is notching up close to 35 million. They indeed do still make them like this.
It's with our pleasure that we award our number three pop song of the year to Lady Gaga ftg. Beyonce with 'Telephone'.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.04

So here's the equation with this single. David Guetta + Kelly Rowland + EMI = mammoth Aussie hit. David Guetta + Kelly Rowland + Universal = mammoth Aussie flop. Yet there was no denying that Kelly Rowland's David Guetta-produced single 'Commander' was a dancefloor stomper that was easily in the same league as its predecessor. Sure, Sony may have dropped her because they wanted Kel to stick to her R&B roots, but here was an artist who wasn't afraid to try something a little new, and after roping in producer-of-the-moment David Guetta, she crossed over with spectacular results.
It was a dancefloor stomper with big diva vocals that more than deserved its time in the chart sun, and was accompanied by a stylish clip that featured a Kelly v Kelly military style dance-off resplendent with an army of dancing soldiers.
Yes indeed - it's our No.4 top pop song of 2010... Kelly Rowland with 'Commander'.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.05

A relatively late comer to the 2010 pop proceedings this one, but we have the sneaking suspicion that it's going to be all over summer radio in the weeks ahead as it climbs ever higher on the digital charts.
'Happiness' is the debut single for 18 year old former America's Got Talent contestant Alexis Jordan and came humming into our life on a bed of 'hurry hurry hurries' and 'quick quick quicks', a message of part regret, part positivity and a rather lovely chorus as the icing on the cake. And not forgetting that superb bed that's almost 100% provided by Canadian DJ Deadmau5 and his track 'Brazil (Second Edit)'.
Co-written and produced by the same peeps behind Rihanna's 'Only Girl (In The World)', just one listen to this in the last couple of months and we had succumbed. We were instantly hooked on happiness.
Ladies and gents, it's our number five top pop song of 2010. Alexis Jordan with 'Happiness'.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.06

Stop press! Australian dance/pop artist in top ten hit shock! While radio continued to habitually gander at what the Yanks were up to to determine their playlists again in 2010, a little Aussie battler came along with a corker of a tune and made everyone sit up and take notice.
Signed to an Aussie label and produced by an Australian, this was one helluva dance/pop anthem from local starlet Zoe Badwi - and we can't for one moment think that we've heard the last from her.
Beyond the track with it's glorious anthemic chorus and Zoe's vocal acrobatics, the video was bloody good too - employing super slo-mo techniques and dancing boys (and girls) to give the entire package an altogether international feel. Ms Badwi, we liked. Nay, we loved.
Yes kids, it's our No.6 auspOp pop song of the year for 2010. It's Zoe Badwi with 'Freefallin'.

MURS INCOMING

Well we didn't see this one coming... Sony Music has just serviced the debut single for last year's British X Factor runner-up Olly Murs to local radio.
'Please Don't Let Me Go' was a No.1 hit for the singer in the UK on its release there back in August, but the word's come through that the track will get a massive boost in the local market, being used in a promotional sync for Channel 7's evergreen 'Packed To The Rafters'.
The promo for the hit show will hit our screens from tonight and will run through 'til February, giving Olly a big leg-up locally.
Sony has also hinted that Olly's self-titled album will be released into Aussie stores early next year.

CHRISTMAS EVE NEWS WRAP

• EMI has announced that Miami Horror's debut album 'Illumination' has been released in Japan. The Japanese version of the LP comes with the obligatory bonus tracks and in this case there are three - all remixes of singles 'Sometimes', 'I Look To You' and 'Holidays'. Back home, the band is celebrating the digital release of the 'Illumination Holidays Pack' by offering fans a free download of a remix of their latest single 'Holidays'. Click HERE!
• Warner's dance offshoot Neon Records has serviced the remixes of Kylie Minogue's latest single 'Better Than Today' to local DJs. Remixes by Bills & Hurr, Japanese Popstars, Monarchy, Bimbo Jones and Bellatrax were those sampled.
• Speaking of Neon, they've hinted at some big new releases coming early in the new year. They include the Fedde Le Grand reworking of the Everything But The Girl classic 'Missing' and 'Accidents Happen' - the new single from Aussie pop starlet Zoe Badwi.
• Dainty Consolidated has announced Bon Jovi's massive 'The Circle' world tour has been lauded by Billboard Magazine as the world's official #1 tour for 2010. The band departed Australia recently after seven stadium shows, that garnered triple platinum sales success for the band's greatest hits package.
• Blackberry users will be able to have all the hottest and latest festival news beamed into their pockets with the launch of Channel [V]'s brand new Festival Guide mobile application for Blackberry. The app will provide line-ups, dates and timetables, as well as giving users the chance to connect with friends, view band profiles and images and get the latest information and interviews. It's free and HERE'S where you'll find it.
• Armin Van Buuren, in Melbourne for the massive new years eve 'Mirage' dance party, has announced that he'll be bringing along a few guest performers for the night. Dutch performers Susana and VanVelzen are on board, so too British singer Christian Burns and the former voice of Iio Nadia Ali.
• And on the US charts this week, Katy Perry's 'Firework' has sparkled all others out of the top position for yet another week, while Bruno Mars edges ever closer on that No.1 position with 'Grenade'. New at No.9 this week is Lil Wayne with '6 Foot 7 Foot'.
• Meantime on the Billboard album chart, Taylor Swift moves back to No.1 with her album 'Speak Now'. Though she didn't do it by much - just 5000 copies separating her from Susan Boyle in position No.2. Michael Jackson's album 'Michael' came in at No.3 with sales of 228,000. R.Kelly and Diddy debut at Nos. 6 and 7 respectively.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.07

We can't quite pick when or why Australia started to fall out of love with Kylie and her music, but it most certainly seems to be the case with the 'Aprodite' project, despite the album being a stream of Stuart Price-produced pop perfection.
And really, there's no stronger song on the LP than it's second single 'Get Outta My Way', which sadly debuted and peaked at a disastrous No.69 on the Aussie singles chart.
Plainly put, 'Get Outta My Way' proved beyond doubt that there's still plenty of A+ pop left in the ol' princess yet - glittering things up with high-energy feel-good pop and a hands-in-the-air chorus that slaps you up the side of the head with a second section just when you think it's all over red rover. And top 50 hit or not... Gosh it's good.
So get outta our way... presenting auspOp's No.7 pop song of 2010 - Kylie Minogue's 'Get Outta My Way'.

SAM SPARRO : Pink Cloud

Soul queen Sam Sparro has dropped the video for his new buzz single ‘Pink Cloud’ and if this is anything to go by, feel free to bump his forthcoming album to the visuals on Fashion TV. There are no hooks or real vocals here. Just an abashed and sumptuous serving of 90s house. Director Franc Fernandez (see: creator of Gaga‘s meat dress) frames Sparro in a flamboyant avant garde affair not short of powder, body paint and ra-rahfaces.
Doesn't matter what they frock him up in though, there ain't no denying he's 21st century hot. A new album is slated for release in 2011. DL

TAKE 40'S TOP 40

Australian entertainment site Take 40 has revealed the 40 biggest music videos for 2010. The fans had more than 8000 music videos to watch over on the site, with more than 61 million video streams throughout 2010. But only one could come out on top.
And the No.1 Take 40 video for 2010? Train's megahit 'Hey, Soul Sister'. US superstar Katy Perry also fared well, with the three singles thus far from her latest album 'Teenage Dream' all placing inside the top ten.
Sadly, however, just three Aussie artists made the top 40 (two if you don't count Brian McFadden), with Birds Of Tokyo and Short Stack placing at Nos.25 and 27 respectively.
Check out the top 40 in the comments section below.

CODY NO SLOUCH

Seems like the kids just can't get enough of Gold Coast tween up and comer Cody Simpson, with his brand new single '4U' - released on Tuesday - already seeing some action on the all-important iTunes chart.
The track is the singer's third single through Warner Music and follows up his smash hit 'Iyiyi' and second single 'Summertime'. The digital single also comes resplendent with two version of 'Iyiyi', along with a couple of b-sides, so you know it's pretty good value.
Look for the debut album to surface sometime in the first half of 2011.

TOP POP 2010 : NO.08

We must have been in the minority with the second single from Gabriella Cilmi's second album 'Ten'. Sure, the whole project pretty much sank like a stone earlier in the year, despite wildly fluctuating reviews from critics, but boy - we thought that 'Hearts Don't Lie' was one heck of a pop gem.
Produced by the peeps at Xenomania, the single was a another departure from the chaotic pop of the album's first single 'On A Mission', replacing the maniacally fast beats with a slick and funky '70s Diana disco bassline from which sprang Gab's Roisin-esque breathy vocals and one of the best choruses you heard all year.
Yes, after spending a reported quarter of a million pounds on the video for 'On A Mission', the clip to 'Hearts Don't Lie' was relatively subdued, but it didn't matter - it was the track itself that had us hook, line and sinker.
Ladies and gentlespoons, presenting auspOp's No.08 single of the year for 2010 - Gabriella Cilmi with 'Hearts Don't Lie'.

GUY FOR ONE

The gang at Sony Music are obviously incredibly unhappy that Bruno Mars is comfortably ensconced in the No.1 position on the iTunes chart with his single 'Grenade', revealing a cunning plan to help Guy Sebastian to overtake the US singer and hit the No.1 position with his latest single 'Who's That Girl'.
And he's going to need a little extra luck on his side within the last 30 hours to get there, with Sony revealing via his OFFICIAL WEBSITE that he's currently around the 25,500 sales mark for the week and still sitting behind Bruno on the iTunes singles chart.
But sadly it would appear that they may have left the 'Make Guy #1 this Xmas' campaign a little too late, with the chart position being officially unveiled on Sunday night, the day after Christmas day.
Could he get there for new years? We'll have to wait and see.

GREYSON CHANCE : Waiting Outside The Lines

Anyone who's a regular watcher of the Ellen Degeneres show will by now know the story of 13 year old Greyson Chance. Catapulted to fame by the talk show host after being discovered on Youtube belting out an impressive version of Lady Gaga's 'Paparazzi', he's now signed to Ellen's own record label and has released this - his debut single - in the US (and here in Australia).
It's a simple, effective ballad that showcases a voice that's rich beyond its years.
But who decided to put him in the middle of a freeway!? That's no place for a 13 year old boy to be playing the piano (even though it is all very CGIed)!? Don't try that at home, kids.

WARNER'S MUST-WIN COMP

We love a good competition here at auspOp - heck, we've given you enough of them across the course of the year. BUT, the gang at Warner has come up with an absolute corker.
They're giving you the chance to win every single CD album they produce in 2011. That's right. Every album Warner Music Australia releases in 2011 will be heading to your place! Bonkers!
To find out more, simply head to Warner's website by clicking on the image above and best of luck! But rush - entries close on January 14.

TAKEOVER'S VENUE CHANGE

Golly there's been a lot going on with the launch of 'The Australian Takeover', coming to a venue near you next month.
Sean Kingston is headlining - you're by now no doubt aware of that - and Iyaz, New Boyz and Quest Crew are also coming along for the ride.
Organisers have also added a Melbourne show to the schedule. But they've now announced that the show that was originally slated to take places at the Sydney Olympic Park State Sports Centre on Tuesday January 25 has now been moved to the Luna Park Big Top. Same bat time.
On the back of the two 'The Australian Takeover' shows, Sean Kingston and New Boyz will then head to the top end, playing a show at Darwin's Discovery Nightclub, before Sean hits the road solo to play a gig in Perth.
Tickets for all are on sale now.

January 25 : Sydney (Olympic Park State Sports Centre)
January 26 : Melbourne (Convention Centre)
January 27 : Darwin (Discovery Nightclub) * Sean Kingston & New Boyz only
January 28 : Perth (Metro City) * Sean Kingston only

TOP POP 2010 : NO.09

Over the course of the past few years, Miami Horror maestro Benjamin Plant and his band of merry men have been ever so slowly honing their sound. Singles like 'Moon Theory' and 'Sometimes' were great, but it was when they combined their talents with up and coming songstress Kimbra for the third single from their album 'Illumination', that the results were more than a little aurally pleasing.
Anyone who believes that this Melbourne based band doesn't have a bright, rosy future need only listen to 'I Look To You' and know instantly that they'll be munching their millinery.
Combining funky disco beats that reminisce of '70s Chic with an almost folk-like sweet siren vocal, an imaginative video with futuristic makeup and a kick-ass chorus, this was truly one of the year's local musical highlights.
If you missed it, take a walk in the woods - you won't be disappointed. Startlingly good Aussie pop.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls - the auspOp No.9 pop song of 2010... Miami Horror ftg. Kimbra with 'I Look To You'.
