NEWTON : Sky High

It was a pretty big hit here in Australia (as was his follow-up single 'Sometimes When We Touch'), but we've seen neither hide nor hair of Mancunian-born Newton since. 'Sky High' was a Stock And Aitken-produced cover version of the '70s Jigsaw classic and it hit the top ten when it was released here in the mid 1990s. The video? Cue sepia tones and a pensive-looking Newton walking amongst a rock outcrop. Classic '90s pop.

* Universal Music has finally serviced Australian radio with the official second single from Rihanna's latest album 'Rated R'. 'Rude Boy' is the follow-up to the highly successful 'Russian Roulette'.
* The chaps from Aussie outfit Gyroscope have announced a brand new album. The band's fourth studio album will be called 'Cohesion' and is set for release on April 09. The first single from the album, 'Some Of The Places I Know' hits radio on Monday.
* Dance music pioneers Orbital haven't visited Australian shores since 1992, but they're about to make amends, with a tour featuring stops in Brisbane (Feb 24 at Family), Melbourne (Feb 19 at Billboard) and Sydney (Feb 23 at the Forum) announced. They'll also play Playground Weekender on Sunday February 21.

* Alexandra Burke has announced ballad 'The Silence' as the third single from her debut album 'Overcome'.
* And for our first check of the world of Twitter for 2010, it would seem that it's all about afflictions; Eva Simons has an itchy eye, Dannii Minogue is freezing her bosoms off and Katy Perry... well she's got some kind of blistered rash we won't tell you where.

ESCAPE TO UNWIND

Every now and again, the team at boutique label Level Two Entertainment come up with a fantastic compilation album that's just right to accompany those idyllic summer afternoons lazing by the poolside. They've done it on three occasions with the Ku De Ta CDs and now they've turned their hand to 'Escape', a stylish collection of 13 gorgeous tunes including a smattering of exclusive new local tracks from the likes of Mr.Jigga and HiFi Mike. It's available at all good music stores now.

GAB GIVES GOOD SNIPPET

We're already a little bit excited by the prospect of the forthcoming Gabriella Cilmi album 'Ten' after the album's first single 'On A Mission' went live just a week or so ago, but the young Australian poppet (pictured in a rather squish-inducing yellow bikini) has just revealed snippets of another couple of tracks from the new album over on her OFFICIAL WEBSITE. One's a ballad, 'Defender', the other's a disco stomper, 'Hearts Don't Lie' that doesn't sound too far removed from something Roisin Murphy might have released. Likey.

NATALIE BASSINGTHWAIGHTE : Love Like This

Aussie songstress Natalie Bassing-thwaighte has premiered the video for the fifth and final single from her debut solo album '1000 Stars'. The track has been released to raise awareness of the Aids Council Of New South Wales' current 'Wear It With Pride' t-shirt campaign in the lead-up to this year's Mardi Gras parade. The clip features a number of cameos from a variety of TV presenters including The Morning Show's Kylie Gillies and Today's Richard Reid, along with Dr.Kerryn Phelps and Courtney Act, all of whom are wearing a selection of 'Wear It With Pride' t-shirts (which are available HERE). The track is set for digital release on Friday.

GO FOR GOLDFRAPP

We don't quite know why they've done it, but bless them they have. EMI Australia has officially released the new Goldfrapp single 'Rocket' to iTunes. The track is the first to be lifted from the 'Frapp's new album 'Head First', due for local release on March 19. In announcing it's release, EMI also states that a full digital bundle of the single will hit retail on March 05, with the video to premiere soon.

NEWS WRAP

* Universal Music will release Mariah Carey's forthcoming remix album 'Angels Advocate' in Australia on March 26. The first single from the album, the Ne-Yo duet 'Angels Cry' was sent to Australian radio this morning.
* Speaking of Universal Music, they're set to digitally release the remixes of Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' on February 05, the same day they'll release the ringtones of tracks from Cheryl Cole's forthcoming album '3 Words'.
* Liberation Music is ready to release a special edition of Tiesto's album 'Kaleidoscope'. However, the release may come a little too late for some fans of the DJ legend, who hits our shores for a series of shows later this week.
* David Guetta's album 'One Love' is also getting the deluxe treatment - for the second time. EMI will release an Australian tour edition of the popular CD on February 26.
* New tracks at radio today include 'Superman Tonight', the second single to be lifted from Bon Jovi's album 'The Circle', Tegan & Sara's 'On Directing' and Shinedown's 'If You Only Knew'.
* EMI has announced a new album from US hop hop outfit Cypress Hill. The band's new album 'Rise Up' is currently set for an April 02 release, preceded by the single of the same name.
* In the UK, Owl City's debut 'Fireflies' has plopped into the No.1 position on the singles chart, replacing Iyaz's track 'Replay'. Example was the only new entry in the top ten, coming in at No.6 with 'Won't Go Quietly'.
* On the British album chart, it's Florence & The Machine once again with 'Lungs'. Lostprophets debut at No.03, with teen star Justin Bieber debuting at No.4.
* And publicists are once again spruiking the success of Sam Clark's debut single 'Broken'. The track has moved up in the ARIA singles chart again this week and remains on top of the ARIA physical singles chart for a second successive week after successful instore appearances in Queensland.

KE$HA COVER #2

Bless their socks... The team at Sony Music has just sent us through the official cover image for Ke$ha's second single 'Blah Blah Blah', which is already getting plenty of love from Australian radio. As revealed earlier this morning, the track was the second most added to Australian radio last week and is already placing in the top five on the ARIA singles chart. A physical single is also set for release, but according to our contact is "not scheduled yet".

CHART WATCH

No change at the top of either the singles or albums charts for another week, but a big No.2 debut for an Aussie country act on the albums chart. But how close were they to knocking SuBo off her perch? Let's find out in our weekly chart watch.

SINGLES : It was a big hit in the US and now it seems Australia is following suit with Owl City's debut single 'Fireflies'. It notches up a fourth week on top of the singles chart with a further 17,989 copies in the bag.
Australia is also now officially in love with Ke$ha. Not only does her former No.1 'Tik Tok' gain a further 15,747 sales in the No.2 position this week, but her second solo single 'Blah Blah Blah' benefits from some good airplay (and some good sales) to race up three spots to No.4 with 10,530 sales. In between her hits is Iyaz's 'Replay' - also up three to No.3 with 14,385 sales.
Black Eyed Peas score themselves another Aussie top ten hit with 'Rock That Body'. It moves into the No.8 position with 8730 sales, while the Guy/Jordin duet 'Art Of Love' edges it's way back towards the top ten.
David Guetta's back in the top 20 - at No.17 - with Kid Cudi and 'Memories' (4682 sales) and Jay Sean makes an impressive 11 place leap to No.18 with 'Do You Remember?' (4499 sales).
Muse's 'Undisclosed Desires' hits a new peak of No.25 (3763 sales), Vanessa Amorosi bullets into the top 50 at No.29 with her single 'Hazardous' (2794 sales), Justin Bieber sells 2729 copies of 'One Time' and Sia scores her highest charting single to date with 'You've Changed', up to No.31 this week with 2677 sales.
Richard Vission also continues his march up the charts with the bangin' 'I Like That' - up from No.52 last week to No.35 this week (2320 sales), while Sam Clark benefits from more strong physical sales in Queensland to jump up to No.39 with 'Broken' (2177).
Outside the top 50, Chuckie ftg. LMFAO comes into the top 100 at No.55 with 'Let The Bass Kick In Miami Bitch' (1580 sales), Muse is 'Uprising' with their previous single - up to No.60 (1482) and teen star Selena Gomez hits the top 100 at No.82 with 'Naturally' (1131 sales).
There are also new entries from Hilltop Hoods ('The Nosebleed Section' at No.87 - 1092 sales), Kid Cudi ('Pursuit Of Happiness' at No.89 - 1074 sales), The Fray ('Never Say Never' at No.90 - 1055 sales) and Mumford & Sons ('The Cave' at No.91 - 1049 sales).

ALBUMS : SuBo continues to reign supreme on the albums chart this week with a further 16,137 copies of her debut album walking out of retail. But country trio The McClymonts have a strong debut in the No.2 spot. Sadly, they weren't really anywhere near Ms Boyle's sales - almost 10,000 behind - with 6925 copies sold of their new album 'Wrapped Up Good'.
'Them Crooked Vultures move back into the top ten (at No.10) with their self-titled LP - and another 2544 sales.
Muse benefits from their Big Day Out inclusion with a ten place jump for their latest album 'The Resistance' - 2069 people bought it last week, while The Temper Trap album 'Conditions' is just seven places away from it's peak of No.9 so far (1964 sales).
The Alvin & The Chipmunks 'Squeakquel' soundtrack is up to No.22 (1643 sales), Owl City's dominance of the singles chart sees his LP 'Ocean Eyes' finally start getting some album chart attention (up to No.25 - 1490 sales) and the Brand Nue Dae soundtrack races into the top 100 at No.29 (1282 sales).
Taking advantage of the low post-Christmas sales, Shock's The Sunny Cowgirls debut at a very respectable No.33 with 'Summer' (1184 sales), Kasabian is back in the top 50 (No.41 with 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' - 998 sales), Spoon debuts at No.47 with 'Transference' (888 sales) and Florence & The Machine are back in the top 50 at No.48 with 'Lungs' (880 sales).
Outside the top 50, Adam Harvey's album benefits from the repackage, re-entering at No.54 (787 sales), Passion Pit's album 'Manners' is back up to No.58 (737 sales), Paolo Nutini's 'Sunny Side Up' re-enters at No.67 (626 sales) and Ronan Keating's 'Stay' is back in at No.75 (580 copies).
Debuts for Justin Bieber ('My World' at No.79 - 546 sales) and McAlister Kemp ('All Kinds Of Tough' at No.93 - 452 copies).

CRAIG DAVID : One More Lie

Craig David must've got a taste of the dance bug with his recent single 'Hot Stuff', which was mashed up with Bob Sinclar's 'World Hold On' to create an altogether listenable piece of dance pop. Now comes 'One More Lie' - the first single to be lifted from his forthcoming album reportedly titled 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered'. The track borrows a sample from a Four Tops' track from the '60s called 'Standing In The Shadows Of Love' and is a surefire club hit. But what of his fans? What will they make of the dancefloor overhaul?

With the video clip of Boyzone's new single leaking online this week, we thought it the perfect time to have a quick squiz at a bygone clip from the Irish boy group. The track, lifted from 1998's 'Where We Belong' album, also featured on the soundtrack to the Mister Bean movie, simply entitled 'Bean'. The famous character, created by Rowan Atkinson, then returned the favour by appearing in the video for the single. There's a bit of singing, a bit of dancing, a bit of pouting and a bit of a giggle.

A singles collection titled 'Evermore' is due for release in the first quarter of the year.

* The lads from British outfit Keane has revealed the tracklisting for their forthcoming 'Night Train' EP, release globally in early May (they're getting in early, obviously). Fans can check out the details and place their order over at Keane's Official Store.
* Shannon Noll has been out of the public eye for quite some time, but he's back thanks to a new duet with Australian recording legend John Williamson, 'Island Of Oceans' (pictured). Lifted from John's retrospective, the track was "aimed to inspire pride in our place on earth."
* The team from the Future Music Festival has announced another round of sideshows for 2010, with Booka Shade playing The Metro in Sydney on March 04 and the Forum Theatre in Melbourne on March 05. Sven Vath & Dubfire plays The Metro in Sydney on March 05.
* Franz Ferdinand has also announced the support acts for their sideshows; Yves Klein Blue and Philadelphia Grand Jury scoring the slots.
* And over in the United States, Vampire Weekend continues their stellar run of global chart successes, debuting in the No.1 position on the Billboard albums chart. Lady Gaga occupies the numbers four and six position with 'The Fame' and 'Fame Monster EP' respectively.
* Over on the Billboard singles chart, it's Ke$ha all the way once again with the almighty 'Tik Tok'.

DIALLING AGAIN

Brisbane outfit Operator Please stole hearts with their infectious debut single 'Just A Song About Ping Pong' three years ago - and now they're hoping to do it all over again with the upcoming release of a new single called 'Logic'. They've also got an album in the pipeline for release later in the year.
But the band is about to allow fans to download a copy of their peppy new single from their OFFICIAL WEBSITE, whereupon you can hear a little snippet (a very little snippet) right now. Register to download from February 08.

ELLIE GOUDING : Starry Eyed

What we like about Ellie Goulding's stuff is that it's pop, but it's the pop of now, not the pop of past - and the fact she'd blend in just perfectly to radio stations around the world (clearly not in Australia, however, as most of them seem completely oblivious to the fact that pop's back). The clip's a bit of alright, with Ellie spending a little of her time in it with stars plastered all over the palms of her hands. Let's hope she doesn't bake any scones while she has them on or there's bound to be some kind of astrological high-tea choking incident. She also does a little bit of levitation, so you know she's evil and is not to be meddled with.

GORILLAZ GET STYLO

In announcing a brand new (long awaited) album for planet earth's most adored cartoon band, EMI has now officially serviced the brand new Gorillaz track 'Stylo' to Australian radio. The track, which runs at a little under four minutes, is the first to to be lifted from the band's forthcoming album 'Plastic Beach', set for a release in Australia on March 05.
It's been five years since the last Gorillaz album dropped, but if the buzz surrounding this new track is anything to go by, the new LP is set to be one of the year's biggest. 'Stylo' hits digital retail this Tuesday.

LEMAR : The Way Love Goes

Young Lemar first found fame through Britain's Fame Academy TV show almost eight years ago and went on to have a series of hits in his homeland, as well as one top 50 appearance here in Australia. And with his Sony Music record contract ready to expire, a greatest hits is in the offing and 'The Way Love Goes' is the first new single to be lifted from it. And it's set to make an impact over in the UK. A little bit French house, a little bit R&B and a little bit pop, the track bounces along from start to finish and is accompanied by a relatively simple, 'clean lines and surfaces' clip that appears slick and polished. Not sure we'll get it here in Australia, but Lemar's 'Hits' package is set for a March release in Britain.

TOURING : Massive Attack

The boys from Massive Attack have announced an Australian tour. And the duo's local fans will need to mark February 05 in their diary 'cause it's the day when both tickets for the tour and the band's new album "Heligoland' both go on sale.
Locked away as part of the tour are six dates, kicking off in Perth on Friday March 12, before heading to Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Martina Topley-Bird will join them on the tour as support.

March 15 : Sydney (Opera House Forecourt)

March 20 : Melbourne (Sidney Myer Music Bowl)

Eleven concerts are now locked in for the singer's first headlining tour of our shores, including a sold-out performance at Perth's Challenge Stadium on April 02. TOURING : Harry Connick Jr.

The team from Michael Coppel most certainly doesn't seem to do things by halves these days, announcing two tours this morning and another couple of shows for one of their upcoming touring artists. But more about the others shortly. Harry Connick Jr. was on Australian soil just last year for a publicity tour (including his now famous appearance on the reborn Hey Hey). But he'll return to us in March for a series of live performances, one each in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Tickets for all dates are on sale on January 29.

BOYZONE : Gave It All Away

This must have been an extraordinarily difficult video for the four remaining members of Boyzone to film. The first since the death last year of band member Stephen Gately, the track is the first to be lifted from the band's forthcoming new album, reportedly titled 'Brothers' and features Gately sharing lead vocals with Ronan Keating.
And the video is incredibly touching, shot entirely in black and white save for the solitary red chair, respectfully reserved for Stephen. Some of the boys are moved to tears as they attempt to write letters to their fallen 'brother'. It's a song (and a video) that will reach out to a pop public still in mourning over the loss of one of their favourite sons.
