HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Thankyou ever so much for your continued patience while we have a well-earned pop sabbatical on the other side of the planet. Plenty of pop surprises coming your way on our return in January. Wishing you the most spectacular evening and the beginning of a brand new, pop-filled decade. Happy New Year to you!

JUST SO YOU KNOW...

We know, we know... Gosh, they've been out of touch a bit, haven't they? Yes indeed we have - we still haven't even posted a Chart Watch segment this week with Susan Boyle's record-breaking Australian sales (more about them when they come through). But as we keep mentioning, we've been traversing the music stores here in Europe, trying to find some great goodies to bring back just for you.
And we've come across these Gaga delicacies in France. The (apparently hard to find) 'Eh Eh' single features the album version, Pet Shop Boys mix and Random Soul Synthetic mix. The 'Paparazzi' single has the radio edit, the Moto Blanco radio edit, the Chew Fu Ghetto House Radio edit and the Demolition Crew remix. Phew!
So we'll be giving these away just as soon as we get fully back on board in the new year!

INTERVIEW : Kate Ceberano

Kate Ceberano is a survivor in the Australian music landscape. From her role as the vocallist in '80s group I'm Talking, through the late '80s 'Brave' era, Jesus Christ Superstar, the pop-filled 'Pash' project in the '90s, right through to her more recent jazz-tinged albums 'Nine Lime Avenue' and 'So Much Beauty'. She's an artist not afraid to constantly evolve. And with her first Christmas album now in the shops, we sat down with Kate to talk the 'C' word, the bawdy showgirl within and putting up with poor interviewers.

“Most of them get so introverted with their questions, they forget that they’re listening for an answer. It’s actually what’s wrong with a lot of TV hosts too. My least favourite response to an answer is this; (Puts on announcers voice).. ‘Soooo… Kate, so tell me, you’ve been doing a Christmas album and…?’ So then I answer, ‘yes actually, it’s been an album I’ve had in my mind… blah blah blah’. And at the end they go ‘alright! And next you’ve also been’…
So in effect, every answer gets answered with ‘Alright!!’ as if he’s ticking off a box. And I said to one guy after doing 50 in succession, I got a little bit short and I said ‘Are you even listening to me?’
‘Alright!!!’ was the response. Look, in a hundred, you could only say that it’s about two and a half percent that are truly stupid (of journalists) and they hide it well.”
Alright… It’s hard to believe that Kate’s iconic album ‘Brave’, which spawned the hits ‘That’s What I Call Love’, ‘Young Boys Are My Weakness’, ‘Bedroom Eyes’ and the title track, is now 20 years old. But Kate tells us it’s as relevant today as it ever was.

“This last tour we did was 25 years of live music and in that, there was a large chunk of it devoted to ‘Brave’. The thing that strikes me is that the song ‘Brave’ is still relevant for me and it’s certainly been a mantra for me for the extent of my career ‘cause it’s basically stating the hopes that I can be actually brave and the hopes that I can become more able to face the things you need to face,” she says, laughing when we ask her whether it bothers her that the ‘Some Boys Are My Weakness’ thing haunts her still.

“Well there’s a point, isn’t there, where it just gets a bit icky ‘cause you’re sort of like at a certain age (dropping into accent) un certain age as they say in France.”

The 25 years that have encompassed Kate’s singing career seem to have flown by, but Kate assures us, “No, I know exactly where they went. I know I worked freakin’ hard at one thing or another, but the main thing is that I’ve been pursuing a very artistic life. Sometimes that’s very public, but then sometimes that’s very private too. The things that one does in the pursuit of art is not always witnessed.”

“Like, for instance, today I was telling somebody about an incident that happened to me in New York, which was extraordinary and it wasn’t an experience that anyone has reference to ‘cause back then we didn’t have video cameras or iPhones or – you couldn’t sit there and record something…
Being in New York and you’re downtown in a club and the singer’s just fled from the stage ‘cause she can’t cope. It was a private party and she was a model who had thought she wanted to go into jazz and my girlfriend had organised a concert of presenting her to these people. Very very hip downtown scene and this singer had just completely lost it. And my girlfriend, who I’d only met the night before at a club, she said, ‘you sing! You sing! Get up and sing! Can you sing!? What are you going to sing!?’ And I had one of those defining moments where because of the experience I had, I was able to get up and say ‘hey, ‘Skylark’ in the key of G and don’t come in ‘til the bridge’. You know, you’ve got this control that only in Australia could you have learnt that skill.”

It’s the skills that Kate’s learnt throughout her 25 plus year career that she hopes will lead her into the next chapter – part performance, part Shirley MacLaine, part Mae West and two parts Bette Midler – if only someone could financially back it.

“That’s my ambition, you know. The thing that I need is money. I’ve got to state it because this is what’s wrong with this country because per capita we don’t have the concentrated effort to put $26 million, which is what a show like that costs.
“If we import Wicked, that’s what that costs and that’s why we love it. It’s got the full ambition of all of America’s greatest talents behind it with creative designer, the writers, the script editors, the lighting, the costumes. Now any less than that and it’s going to look tawdry and homespun and I don’t want that. And yet I know that I could pull of, with all the skills I’ve attained over 25 years, a divine miss Kate. I need like Baz Lurhmann. I need someone or Hugh Jackman to come back. I need a producer of that ilk… See the problem is… if you spend that kind of money in this country, you can’t export it necessarily, so you can’t really get it back. But if it was a show that was kind of generic and it wasn’t relying on a local audience – on a local fanbase only, but was a really great show….

We tell her she could take it to Vegas!

“Yeah!? Or Broadway even! I want to. I dream of it. I’m on it. I actually wrote a one-woman play and put it up at the cabaret festival a couple of months ago in Adelaide for the purpose of starting to sharpen the pencil as it were in the direction of livretto and monologue and music. And it was beautiful. The show was really powerful and well received. But it’s not the sort of thing that I can do in the long run here – I just can’t make a living doing it right now. But it’s done. The cat is out of the bag and this thing is really real for me. It’s something I will want to… So… I’ve said it and it’s out there.”

This year Kate has released her first ever Christmas album ‘Merry Christmas’ (pictured).
And despite some people who’ve questioned it’s release given Kate’s Scientology beliefs, Kate says the album’s intentions are pure and simple.

“In a nutshell… I think Christmas belongs to family, first and foremost. I don’t think it matters necessarily what you believe religiously, I think people innately all believe in family. And that’s we honour – and that’s what anybody honours – anybody who isn’t a Grinch. Let’s face it, all the Grinch is really is someone who didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas, so we know what makes Grinches. Somebody should have just bought them that present. They didn’t buy them that present from thereafter they were like ‘fuck you, I’m never going to follow Christmas again’.”

Erm.. Did Kate Ceberano just drop the ‘f’ bomb? Surely not.

“For me, it’s a private joy knowing that other people know me to be a certain way. It’s never going to be a public persona – they won’t believe it. You could tell them I speak a language like that, but they go ‘Ceberano? Oh no – she’s a Scientologist – she’d never say anything like that!’ They’re imposing their own stereotype all across me! I mean, I am so bawdy. And I’m not saying it to gloat, it’s just I’m a rock and roll girl – I was born and raised in a tour bus. It’s authentic, but they see something different.”

We suggest it may be this bawdy side of Kate that sees her purring sexily all over the Christmas classic ‘Santa Baby’ on the new album.

“Oh you’re just hearing it through different ears. If you listen to it through a child’s ears… It does sound like a little baby singing it to me. I think that there’s something that…” (we interrupt, saying she’s pulling our leg) “You’re seeing me as sexy! Kids are not seeing me as sexy, so there’s like the double life of Veronique is what I’m saying.”

At this point, a couple of Universal Music reps have meandered into the boardroom, and we plump for a vote. It’s unanimous – Kate's version of ‘Santa Baby’ is sexy.

(Kate, innocently) “I can’t help it. It’s not my fault if they write lyrics like ‘come on down my chimney tonight’ – that’s someone’s innuendo, it’s not mine!! Come inside my chimney tonight? No. (Laughter). Come and trim my Christmas tree! Well they’re the words! I’m just singing how it was written!”

We tell her we’ll have to get this well-hidden Kate Ceberano out to the general public.

“Listen, you could try, but they won’t believe you. Because even myself I can’t put my own scandal out there. You could and they’d be like ‘gee these guys are a bit down on Ceberano. They clearly don’t understand her, the sexy Scientologist would never use words like that.’,“ she jokes.

But she does admit to having a little crush on a certain Irish crooner who joins her for a duet on the new album.

“Ronan Keating… I have to admit, I’ve got a little bit of a crush. I gotta say. Because he’s got a great sense of humour and he’s a musician – I’m a bit partial to both those things. I’ve found his interest in me, thinking that I’m a middle-aged mum compared to him, the fact that he was interested and he was sincere really blew me away. I was saying ‘I really like your voice and I love singing with you’ and I was going (GUSHES). Wiping spit off the table.”

More laughter ensues. Joy and laughter. Two essential ingredients for the festive season – and two that Miss Kate Ceberano delivers in spades. Merry Christmas indeed.

Kate's album 'Merry Christmas' is out now.
Santa arrives overnight tomorrow night.

CHART WATCH

Well it's pretty much the same again at the top of the ARIA singles and albums charts this week - Ke$ha's on top for a seventh consecutive week and Susan Boyle has now shipped more than seven times platinum (490,000 units) to stores since her album was released just five weeks ago. But how many copies did she sell this week? Find out in our pre-Christmas chart watch!

SINGLES : Yes, it's week seven on top for the lovely Ke$ha and one of those tracks you just can't get out of your head - the insanely catchy 'Tik Tok'. Kesh-Kesh notches up a further 19,768 sales this week, bringing her total sales to a bees' dick short of double platinum since the track's debut at the end of October.
Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' sales have strengthened too - up to 15,082 sales this week. In fact the entire top six recorded sales in excess of 10,000 copies, which is pretty decent. Stan Walker in No.3 bagged 13,615 copies, Owl City in No.4 (up from No.11) bagged 13,384 copies, Jay Z & Alicia in No.5 sold 10,934 copies and Jay Sean in at No.6 added a further 10,160 sales.
Short Stack debuted in the No.08 position with their 'Sweet December' EP - a total of 9913 Stack fans hit the shops last week, including a rather massive number of fans in Queensland.
Idol runner-up Hayley Warner had to settle for a No.11 debut for her debut single 'Good Day'. It had some pretty decent sales - 8063 to be precise, but in the midst of a big sales week, she just couldn't crack the top ten.
Further down the chart, LMFAO debuts in the top 50 at No.37 with 'I'm In Miami Bitch' (1835 sales), The Script makes a re-entrance into the top 50 at No.39 with 'Before The Worst' (1797 sales) and Rob Thomas cracks it again with new single 'Give Me The Meltdown'. It's in at No.41 (1755 sales).
Outside the top 50, Pitbull's 'Hotel Room Service (Remix)' debuts in the No.58 position (1369 sales), Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' refuses to go away, picking up nine places again to No.59 this week (1360 sales).
The Glee Cast's take on the Kelly Clarkson hit 'My Life Would Suck Without You' debuts at No.66 (1213 sales), Vanessa Amorosi's new single 'Hazardous' makes a lacklustre debut at No.84 (1005 sales), Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros debut at No.86 with 'Home' (913 sales) and Miami Horror cracks the top 100 - at No.100 with 'Sometimes' (813 copies).

ALBUMS : In any ordinary sales week, Australian Idol Stan Walker would have 'pissed it in' with his debut album 'Introducing'. But this is the pre-Christmas sales week - and as such - there are two people standing in his way. One, a Canadian crooner - the other, a Scottish housewife.
Susan Boyle sells an extraordinary number of albums this week. In fact, since ARIA started compiling their charts using "electronically scanned sales data" back in 1997, only Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll and Damien Leith have sold more copies of an album in Australia in a single week. SuBo this week sold an incredible 125,656 copies of 'I Dreamed A Dream', almost 40,000 copies more than she sold last week.
Putting it plainly, Michael Buble was a long way behind in the No.2 position. 41,451 copies of 'Crazy Love' were sold in Australia last week.
And putting it even more plainly, Michael sold almost twice as many albums as Stan Walker. Stan sold 20,952 copies of 'Introducing' to debut at No.3.
Kate Ceberano's 'Merry Christmas' leaps into the top 20 for the first time (at No.17) and sells a further 6768 copies in the process, while Rob Thomas joins her in leaping, he jumps ten spots to No.18 with his album 'Cradlesong' (6289 sales).
Alicia Keys' album 'The Element Of Freedom' has a softer start to it's shelf life - with 5875 sales, debuting at No.21, while Katherine Jenkins debuts in the top 50 with 'Believe' (No.44 - 3244 sales).
Outside the top 50, Andre Rieu's 'Live In Sydney' debuts at No.51 (2601 sales), Keith Urban's 'Defying Gravity' benefits from the tour (up to No.72 - 1699 sales) and Sia's back in at No.100 with 'Some People Have Real Problems' (1117 sales).

OFFICIAL ARIA CHARTS

GAGA CHANGES SYDNEY

Due to unprecedented demand in Sydney, Lady Gaga has decided to up the anti as part of her forthcoming Monster Ball tour of Australia. Originally slated for Hordern Pavillion in March, Michael Coppel has announced that due to the size of the show, the Sydney dates (March 17 and 18) will now be played at the larger Sydney Entertainment Centre. Extra tickets will also be released to co-incide with the change in venue. Gaga has even recorded a special message just for Sydney fans. Click HERE to see!

JOE MCELDERRY : The Climb

It'll be later today when the official chart results from the UK come through - whether X Factor winner Joe McElderry has been successful or not in debuting in the No.1 position in England and therefore scoring the coveted UK Christmas number one. But the video for his debut single has been revealed - and it's the usual fare. Joe's singing to the camera with plenty of love and feeling as we're treated to a trip back through his X Factor journey.

ALEXANDRA BURKE : Broken Heels

Aaah the lovely Alexander Burke, who tore up the X Factor finale stage with a rendition of previous single 'Bad Boys' with eventual runners-up JLS. Well 'Broken Heels' is Alex's third single and it'll be physically released early in the new year. But she's whacked out the video - and it seems she's going straight after the lucrative American market (she's told UK TV she'll release her album there next year). She looks amazing there in the changing rooms as she and her fellow players ready themselves to head out onto the pitch (though how she'll handle the pitch in those heels is completely beyond our pop comprehension). But apparently they can do it better in broken heels, so perhaps that's what'll end up happening. But one thing that we don't get is... 'Lex is No.17 in the change rooms, but No.18 on the field. What gives?

MARIAH CAREY : O Holy Night

Given the big day in December is just five more sleeps away, we thought it was the perfect time to drag out a Christmas 'Lookback' for the year (we might even do one next week to make sure all bases are covered). And this time it's another cut from Mariah Carey's evergreen festive season album 'Merry Christmas' - 'O Holy Night'. It's a gospel soarer that was never officially released on single (though rare promo copies sometimes do the rounds) and we likey very much. The video, set in a gospel church with Christmas tree and Mimi in a velveteen frock, features a slightly different version of the song from that of the album, but it's still soaring and glorious. Merry Christmas to you.

THINGS WE FOUND IN MANCHESTER

As you're probably well aware by now, we at auspOp are on a little pop sabbatical to the UK at the moment (hence it being slightly quieter on the pop post front). But while in Manchester in the north of England, we came across this little gem from former Stock Aitken Waterman poppet Sonia at a record fair. It's her 1993 Eurovision entry 'Better The Devil You Know'. Only in the UK and only in the late '80s and early '90s could you get away with wearing a sailor's hat on a CD single sleeve, but we couldn't resist.

CORINNE BAILEY RAE : I'd Do It All Again

We fell a little bit in love with Corinne Bailey Rae a couple of years ago when she sang us into a trance with her breakthrough Aussie single 'Put Your Records On'. Well she's back with a brand new single called 'I'd Do It All Again' and we're rather excited to present to you the video (we're excited at the moment - we haven't seen it yet, so things could most definitely change). Let's watch it together shall we and come up with a few pointers as to what we think of it...
1. We're glad Corinne doesn't have a grumbly morning voice - that wouldn't have lent itself too well to the start of the song.
2. She doesn't need make-up, she's gorgeous already. But gosh, hasn't she got a lot of books!?
3. We can't believe Corinne doesn't have herself a personal shopper and prefers to pop down to the local Tesco in person.
4. We have an overwhelming sense of deja-vu.
5. She'd better be careful wandering out into traffic like that - she could get herself killed (though her hair will protect her from severe cranial impact).
6. We have an overwhelming sense of deja-vu.
It's soulful and rather lovely, don't you think? Though we don't assume radio's going to get behind it too much in Australia.

SATURDAY NEWS WRAP #06

* The support acts have been revealed for La Roux's forthcoming Australian tour. They'll be joined onsatge at their three concerts in March (Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide) by Aussie performer Bertie Blackman, along with local electropop duo Tim & Jean.
* Interscope Records in the United States is celebrating, with a first in 2009 - they've managed to nab the top four places on Billboard's end of year Hot 100 charts. Black Eyed Peas scored positions #4 and #1 with 'I Gotta Feeling' and 'Boom Boom Pow' respectively and Lady Gaga popped into the Nos.2 and 3 positions with 'Poker Face' and 'Just Dance'.
* More results out of the US have seen defunct Aussie outfit Savage Garden top the list of the decade-end Adult Contemporary Songs chart. They beat out the likes of Lee Ann Womack and Matchbox 20 to score the No.1 position with their mega-ballad 'I Knew I Loved You'.
* Universal Music in Australia has taken out a six track Christmas sampler to radio this week, in the hope of spreading some festive cheer via the airwaves. The sampler features the Ronan Keating and Kate Ceberano duet 'It's Only Christmas' along with tracks from Andre Rieu, Andrea Bocelli and George Michael. Lady Gaga ftg. Space Cowboy's 'Christmas Tree' makes the cut, along with The Hives & Cyndi Lauper's 'A Christmas Duel'.
* With his single 'Down' now moving down the charts, Universal Music Australia has serviced 'Do You Remember' - the second single for UK soul artist Jay Sean - to Australian radio. The singer's album 'All Or Nothing' was released yesterday.
* Some of our readers are suggesting that the super-deluxe version of Lady Gaga's album may not make it into retails stores in Australia. They've told us that such limited stock was brought into the country that only pre-orders of the new edition will be fulfilled.
* Checking the charts around the world - and firstly to the United States, where Jay Z and Alicia Keys remain on top again with their single 'Empire State Of Mind'. But they shouldn't get too comfortable 'cause the all-conquering Ke$ha is knocking on the door with her single 'Tik Tok' moving up to No.2.
* On the Billboard albums chart, it's once again Susan Boyle who's in the top position with her album 'I Dreamed A Dream'. It seems to be No.1 everywhere - Australia, the UK and even in New Zealand where's it's already been certified eight times platinum for sales of more than 120,000 copies in just three weeks on sale.
* In the UK, Lady Gaga's done it - cracking the No.1 position on the singles chart with her track 'Bad Romance'. She displaces the Peter Kay charity medley to claim the top spot, with Ke$ha also edging her way to the top here.
* On the UK albums chart, once again it's Susan Boyle, who notches up a third successive week at No.1. Lady Gaga's on the move though - her 'The Fame Monster' set moves up an incredible ten places to No.2. But there's no doubt SuBo will be the one to beat for the Christmas No.1.
* And concluding our international chart wrap, he may be the Australian Idol, but that hasn't stopped Stan Walker from topping the New Zealand singles chart with his single 'Black Box'. It's the singer's second week on the top spot - a position he failed to nab here in Australia.
* Kylie Minogue's 'Live In New York' album is making rather a big impact on the Aussie iTunes store. The album, featuring songs recorded live onstage at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom during her recent US tour, is available only digitally in Australia, but is currently topping the albums chart, even beating out the likes of Susan Boyle and Australian Idol winner Stan Walker.
* Belgian duo Aeroplane has been added to the line-up for the Hot BBQ music festival at Victoria's Point Nepean Quarantine Station in Portsea. They join a throng of awesome Aussie acts, including The Presets, Jet and Sneaky Sound System on the bill for the January 16 event.
* Voting is underway on Monday in the annual Triple J Hottest 100. Check out who's made the list of those you can vote from by clicking on THIS LINK.
* The gang from UK remixers Bimbo Jones have revealed they'll be playing alongside David Guetta at the Royal Hall of Industries for the 2010 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.
* And New Zealand rapper Scribe has been announced as the support act for British hip hop artist Dizzee Rascal when he hits the stage for two special sideshows in January. He plays the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on January 24 and Melbourne's Forum Theatre on January 28.

VANESSA AMOROSI : Hazardous

What in the world? You've left us alone for three bloody days while we sweated on everything hoping that you'd eventually return to us and now all of a sudden you're back bombarding us with al kinds of new pop information? You betcha buns! Vanessa Amorosi has revealed the video for the second single from her album 'Hazardous'. It's one of those blue-screen jobs, where Ness has been stuck in a chilly old studio somewhere (looking rather hot in her little singlet top, we have to admit), while images of flames and people parkouring (is that even a word) are plastered around her. And that's pretty much all you get for the price of admission, kids. It should have been so much more.

TOURING : The Fray

The boys from US outfit The Fray have experienced some pretty decent chart success here in Australia, what with two top five albums, a top five single and even a No.1 single ('You Found Me') last year. And the boys are giving back to their Aussie fans, this week announcing their return to our fair shores for a series of shows in March and April next year. Along with an appearance at Bluesfest in Byron Bay on April 05, they'll play shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide with tickets for all dates on sale on Monday December 21.

March 30 : Sydney (Luna Park Big Top)
April 01 : Melbourne (Festival Hall)
April 03 : Adelaide (Thebarton Theatre)
April 05 : Byron Bay (Bluesfest)

JOE AGAINST THE MACHINE

It's shaping up to be a battle royale here in the UK this weekend, with a campaign by the BBC to get 'Killing In The Name', the 1992 hit by Rage Against The Machine to the Christmas number one position ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry's debut single 'The Climb'. From all reports so far, Rage Against The Machine is ahead in the sales race - and is currently No.1 on the UK iTunes store.
Apparently it all boils down to a fierce rivalry between X Factor broadcaster ITV and the BBC, whose Strictly Come Dancing (our Dancing With The Stars) was trounced in the ratings on Sunday night. As revenge, they're getting all their viewers to download the X Factor opponent's song. Who'll come out victorious? It'd be nice to see Joe at the top, but it seems increasingly likely that it's not going to happen...

IS POP REALLY SUCH A DIRTY WORD?

We know what you've been thinking... Gosh - they've dropped off the planet!? And while yes, it would appear that we've been lost for days, it's certainly not been our fault. Given a hectic little European schedule over the Christmas/New Year period, we're hooked up to the world wide web via Britain's T-Mobile. Sadly, T-Mobile has classified anything on 'blogger' as 'explicit content' and we've been trying desperately to rectify the situation for the last four days - near on impossible when you're in the depths of country Britain. So our apologies - but we're still here, we still love you and there's a post or three being prepared as we speak.

CHART WATCH

Susan Boyle has pulled off a stunning sales result this week with her debut album 'I Dreamed A Dream' - and not since the debut of Pink's 'Funhouse' album has a weekly sales figure been so high. How high? Read on in our weekly chart watch segment.

SINGLES : Young Ke$ha has secured herself a fifth consecutive week on top of the ARIA singles chart with her track 'Tik Tok'. It thrashed all comers again, outselling the No.2 single (Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' by more than 5500 copies. 19,238 people snapped 'Tik Tok' up in the past week.
In the No.2 position and rising one place was Lady Gaga and this week's UK No.1 'Bad Romance'. It bagged a further 13,723 copies this week, beating out Stan Walker's debut single 'Black Box' by 1452 copies.
Moving up into the top five at No.4 was Jay-Z with Alicia Keys and 'Empire State Of Mind' (10,525 sales), while Jay Sean once again moves 'Down' to No.5 (9701 copies).
Jason DeRulo and Guy Sebastian with Jordin Sparks both improve - they're into the top ten at Nos.7 and 8 (8674 and 8442 copies) respectively, while former US No.1 Owl City is knocking on the door of a top ten Aussie hit with 'Fireflies'. It's placing at No.11 this week (up eleven places) on the back of 6866 sales.
John Butler Trio scores the week's highest new entry (No.15) with his their new single 'One Way Road' (4726 sales) and Jessica Mauboy improves seven places with her new single 'Let Me Be Me' up to No.26 (2679 sales).
The 'Telephone'/'Video Phone' battle continues, with Beyonce ftg. Gaga song beaten this week by the Gaga ftg. Beyonce track. 'Telephone' up to No.30, 'Video Phone' down to No.36.
Robbie Williams breaks them both up with his new single 'You Know Me'. It's up into the top 50 for the first week at No.33 with 1891 sales, just 18 copies ahead of his previous single 'Bodies' one spot behind.
Timbaland ftg. Nelly Furtado break the top 50 too with new single 'Morning After Dark'. It's in at No.38 with 1825 sales, while two more top 50 debuts come courtesy of the Glee Cast ('True Colours' at No.47 - 1487 sales) and Angus & Julia Stone ('And The Boys' at No.50 - 1431 sales).
Outside the top 50, there's a debut for Rob Thomas at No.52 ('Give Me The Meltdown' - 1385 sales), the Glee Cast are in action again with their cover of the Wham classic 'Last Christmas' (No.60 with 1252 sales), Lisa Mitchell's single 'Coin Laundry' suffers a post-ARIAs slump - down from No.32 to No.73 (1057 sales) and the John Butler Trio is at it again at No.77 with 'I'm Ready'. It sells 994 copies.
Further still, more action for the Glee Cast. 'Imagine' is in at No.82 (955), while Cassie Davis' 'No More' rises to No.90 (865).

ALBUMS : Take a bow, Susan Boyle. No other artist has sold this many albums in a week this year. How many? Try 85,925 copies on for size. Susan scanned through in excess of platinum sales within a week. The album is now four times platinum (280,000 copies) after just three weeks on sale. Incredible.
Michael Buble, although No.2 on paper - was a long, long way behind. In an ordinary sales week, 25,708 copies would have had him across the line by miles, but it pales into comparison to SuBo's figures.
Only the No.1 and No.2 albums sold more than 10,000 copies last week, with Foo Fighters at No.3 (9882) and Black Eyed Peas at No.4 (9762) a long, long way behind.
Finally, ARIA has given Gaga's 'The Fame Monster' a chart all of it's own. It makes a 'debut' this week at No.6 with 9299 copies sold, while volume two of the Glee soundtrack debuts in the No.8 position on the back of 9138 sales.
The Aussie tour is paying dividends for Fleetwood Mac - their best of moves up from No.36 to No.17 with 4712 sales and the best of Enya benefits from a pre-Christmas splurge - 4441 copies were scanned through last week.
Thirty Seconds To Mars scores a top 40 debut with their new album 'This Is War' (No.36 with 2965 sales), Chris Brown's 'Graffiti' debuts at No.40 with 2849 sales and another top 50 debut comes courtesy of Timbaland - in at No.45 with 'Shock Value II' (2319 sales).
Not much movement outside the top 50 - though Hugh Sheridan's album 'Speak Love' moves into the top 100 for the first time - at No.86 (1030 sales).

OFFICIAL ARIA CHARTS

X FACTOR WINNER

18 year old South Shields singer Joe McElderry has won the sixth series of Britain's X Factor this evening (London time). He won the show over Olly Murs in what seemed like a tight tussle for votes between the pair. It was later revealed that Joe had secured more than 60% of the vote to win. Guest performances on the final came courtesy of Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke with JLS, George Michael and Sir Paul McCartney. Joe will release his debut single 'The Climb' (better known to Australian audiences as the top ten hit for Miley Cyrus) on Wednesday this week.

KATE HITS THE SHOPS

Things seem to be going rather well in Kate Ceberano's world - not only has her latest album, 'Merry Christmas' now been classified gold (for sales of 35,000 copies or more) just two weeks out from the big day, she's also hitting the shops again. Well just the one shop, to be honest - and it's at the Warringah Mall in Sydney next Saturday, December 19. She'll perform tracks from 'Merry Christmas' from midday on Saturday, staying on to sign copies of the album shortly after. She'll also appear at Carols In The Domain later the same evening and at Perth's IGA Carols by Candlelight the following night. In the meantime, look out for our interview with Kate, posting within the next few days.

B*WITCHED : C'est La Vie

Now almost 12 years old, 'C'est La Vie' was the debut single for Irish girlgroup B*Witched. We reckon Sony Music might have seen the global impact that a certain other girl group was experiencing at the time and desperately wanted a slice of the Spice pie. They released 'C;est La Vie' throughout the world - and it was successful, hitting No.1 in the UK, the top ten in the US and here in Australia. The clip was a bit of fun, with the foursome dancing their way through a flower-laden meadow. But they'd kidnapped a boy and tied him to a tree and then to further taunt him, they spray him with a garden hose. auspOp does not condone this kind of pop behaviour. There's also a little bit of traditional Irish dancing as a little nod to the groups' roots.

The Pet Shop Boys release their brand new 'Christmas' EP in the UK on Monday, and to celebrate, they've released this little live video of one of the songs featured on it - 'All Over The World', the original version of which is featured on their album 'Yes'. Taken from their most recent tour (they're also set to perform at London's O2 Arena on Monday week), the clip features dancers, shots of Neil, shots of Chris, shots of the crowd and some singing buildings. Yes, you read right.

ANGUS & JULIA STONE : And The Boys

Poor Julia Stone - there she is having a nice little lay down, performing her brand new single 'And The Boys' to the camera which is perched precariously high above her. Little does she know that by one minute into the new video, it would appear that her house is on fire. Strangely, though, there seems to be no panic in the singer's eyes - she simply pushes her hand through the smoke, while continuing to sing the track. But before we know it, she's out in the great outdoors, flying across a number of different surfaces (waves, asphalt etc). It's altogether mesmerising.

CHART WATCH

Plenty of post-ARIAs love in both the official Aussie singles and albums charts this week - pretty much all the night's performers improved, with The Temper Trap finally getting some love with 'Sweet Disposition'. But as with last week, Susan Boyle is completely unstoppable on the ARIA albums chart, outselling her nearest rival by almost THIRTY THOUSAND COPIES!! Let's check out the charts;

SINGLES : Ke$ha's dominance of the Australian singles chart shows no signs of slowing for the moment - the young American holding firm in the No.1 position for another week with her debut solo effort 'Tik Tok'. It bagged a further 20,452 copies this week, bringing to 97,763 the number of copies the track's sold since it's debut just seven weeks ago.
Australian Idol Stan Walker will just have to settle for the bridesmaid's position with his debut single 'Black Box'. And with the video premiering late last week, sales of the track rose slightly week on week, from 15,533 last week to 17,493 this week.
Lady Gaga improves this week with her latest 'Bad Romance'. It's up two places to No.3, with a further 13,375 copies sold, while both Jay Sean and the Black Eyed Peas drop.
Two new entries into the top ten this week come courtesy of Orianthi (up five to No.08 with 'According To You' - 7569 sales) and Guy Sebastian with Jordin Sparks (also up five to No.10 with 'Art Of Love' - 6202 sales). But it's at the expense of Vanessa Amorosi and Britney Spears whose singles 'This Is Who I Am' and '3' drop to No.17 and No.18 respectively.
Jason DeRulo bullets nine places to be knocking on the door of top ten success with his single 'Whatcha Say' - up to No.11 this week with 6058 sales. The Temper Trap joins him in the top 20, FINALLY getting some long-awaited love for their debut single 'Sweet Disposition'. It's up 32 places to No.16 (4954 sales).
More post-ARIAs love from No.20 to No.30 - Empire Of The Sun re-emerges at No.23 with 'Walking On A Dream' (3598 sales), Robbie Williams' 'Bodies' pops up again to No.24 (3278 sales) and Kate Miller-Heidke rises again - 'The Last Day On Earth' up seven to No.27 (2848 sales).
Beyonce ftg. Lady Gaga's 'Video Phone' overtakes Lady Gaga ftg. Beyonce's 'Telephone' as the most popular track this week - leaping nine places to No.31 (2379 copies), while Lisa Mitchell's 'Coin Laundry' returns post-ARIAs (No.32) and Jessica Mauboy has to settle for No.33 with her latest single 'Let Me Be Me' (2315 sales).
Further down, there are re-emergences from Ladyhawke (No.41) and Hilltop Hoods (No.45), while the No.40 - No.50 spots are peppered with top 50 debuts; No.44 - Sarah Blasko 'We Won't Run' (1748), No.46 - David Guetta ftg. Estelle 'One Love' (1690) and No.48 - Taylor Swift 'Fifteen' (1584).
Outside the top 50, the new Muse single 'Undisclosed Desires' debuts at No.55 (1336 copies), Sam Clark's single 'Broken' teeters on a top 50 berth - at No.57 (1304 sales), Empire Of The Sun's 'We Are The People' makes a re-entry at No.65 and the title track from Susan Boyle's album 'I Dreamed A Dream' makes a splash at No.66 (1224 sales).
Sarah Blasko returns with 'All I Want' (No.81), Rihanna is in at No.82 with 'Wait Your Turn' (1006 sales), Hilltop Hoods debut at No.21 with 'The Nosebleed Section' (886 sales) and Susan Boyle's at it again with her Rolling Stones cover 'Wild Horses' debuting at No.93 (872 copies).

ALBUMS : There is absolutely no budging Susan Boyle this week - with her album 'I Dreamed A Dream' classified three times platinum in just two weeks on sale, she's assured that there are plenty of copies of it on retailers' shelves for people to buy - and it seems the public is responding, keeping her at No.1 thanks to a whopping 47,449 sales this week - the biggest weekly sales figure of any album in Australia this year.
And though Michael Buble holds the No.2 position with his 'Crazy Love' album, his sales were a long, long way behind. Though decent, 18,701 copies is almost 30,000 sales off the pace.
Gaga returns to the top three with 'The Fame' (now in it's 'Monster' guise) - it sells a further 9498 copies this week, with Robbie Williams' 'Reality Killed The Video Star' returning to the top five (at No.4) following a healthy 8862 sales.
Empire Of The Sun benefits post-ARIAs. 5535 people rushed into the shops last week after Luke's performance on the Acer Arena stage and grabbed a copy of 'Walking On A Dream'.
Sarah Blasko is another Aussie artist who benefits from an abridged ARIAs turn - No.19 for 'As Day Follows Night', up 45 places, so too Kate Miller-Heidke, who's album 'Curiouser' moves from No.37 to No.22 (3229 sales).
Enya's best-of jumps 16 to No.24 (3114 sales), Triple J's 'Like A Version Vol.5' debuts at No.29 (2998 sales), Lisa Mitchell's up 20 spots to No.30 and Kate Ceberano's 'Merry Christmas' moves into the top 50 at No.33 (2754 sales).
There's more Christmas cheer at No.35 - this time for Andrea Bocelli (2701 copies), Mark Vincent's album 'My Dream, Mio Visione' benefits from the pre-Christmas re-package (up 30 places to No.38), so too Jimmy Barnes' 'The Rhythm And The Blues' (No.41). And 50 Cent isn't worth what it was last week - the album 'Before I Self Destruct' doing just that - plummeting 27 places to No.46.

DELPHIC : Doubt

We mentioned midway through last month that Manchester outfit Delphic had inked a deal with Modular Recordings to release their brand new album 'Acolyte', which they'll do in Australia on January 22. And here's the video for the album's first single - 'Doubt'. And putting it plainly, it's impossible not to like. Starting off all clean lines and surfaces, the clip's faces slowly fall victim to a series of little platinum coloured objects - blocks, marbles and what looks like a field of ARIA Awards. Awesome clip, awesome song - now to wait and see if Australian radio (outside the usual suspects - the communities, the 'J's) is progressive enough to give them a go.

MARGARET URLICH : Escaping

We remember being totally engrossed in our cassingle (read about them HERE, kids) of Margaret Urlich's 'Escaping' way back in 1990 - the Auckland native had started her assault on the Aussie music charts with the track, the first of four singles to be lifted off her debut album 'Safety In Numbers'. It also turned out to be Margaret's biggest hit in Australia - peaking inside the top 20. The clip was basic, but effective, Margaret enjoying a quick cuppa before bursting into the studio in a boob-tube and a pair of impossibly (but altogether obligatory) high-waisted jeans for a succession of dance moves. Great track that brings back some fantastic memories.
