TOP SINGLES OF 2008 (RUNNERS UP)

Well we've given you the run-down of those albums we think made the cut in 2008, firstly with our top five albums countdown and then earlier this evening with the albums that just missed out. Over the past five days, we've also had our top five singles of 2008, culminating in our number one earlier today. But which other singles do we think rated a mention in 2008? There are a few of them, so let's go through them one by one;

THE KILLERS : HUMAN Let's get one thing straight right here and now. We think that Mister Brandon Flowers is a bloody marvellous pOp genius, and when he and his band teamed up with Madonna's ex-producer, the results were truly staggering. A shame then that commercial radio in Australia failed to see the bigger picture and all but ignored 'Human'. We have no idea what "are we human or are we dancer" means either, but the song is sheer brilliance.

ADELE : CHASING PAVEMENTS British soul singer Adele was responsible for the first truly great single of 2008 when she released this, her debut single in January. It was a massive hit in her native UK, and found chart success right throughout Europe. When it came to Australia though, again she was ignored, the single peaking on our ARIA charts at No.56. Shame really, because this is about as raw and honest a pOp song as you're ever likely to get. Simply divine.

ALPHABEAT : FASCINATIONHere's another track that was released early on this year overseas and failed to make an impact locally - Alphabeat's fun-filled, hands-in-the-air, cheesy-pOp, sing-a-long track 'Fascination' became an instant classic, hitting the top ten in the UK on it's release in February, six months after it's release in the band's native Denmark. Pure unadulterated pOp music that makes you feel good - but once again ignored by a local radio all too focussed on what's happening in the US.

TAKE THAT : GREATEST DAY Are you starting to see a pattern emerging here? Four truly amazing pOp songs, all but completely ignored by the 2Days and Novas of the world and it's unfortunate that those two networks have such audience share 'cause they certainly ain't giving us what WE want! pOp is back, and the sooner they wake up to it, the better. Take 'Take That' for example - The fastest selling album of the 21st century in the UK, but has local radio touched this monster European hit? Have they bugger!

BRITNEY SPEARS : WOMANIZER A heck of a lot was riding on this release - and everything had to be just right. Thankfully, everything was just right, from the song, to the lyrics, to the video clip, the artwork for the single and much more. Britney showed that she was still sexy and sassy and could still belt out a number (albeit with the help of a vocoder). That said, we'll be watching closely in 2009 to make sure she doesn't fall off the rails again.

CYNDI LAUPER : INTO THE NIGHTLIFE Cyndi Lauper - disco diva. Didn't quite sit right with us, but after ordering the album in from Japan in May, we instantly connected with this song. It was edgy, punchy and oh-so-now in it's sound, but as radio locally is not known to take chances, they put her in the too hard basket (the Nova network deserves a pat on the back for at least giving this a go). A shame though that Sony Australia still hasn't released the remixes digitally. The fans are still after them!

KYLIE MINOGUE : THE ONE The greatest Kylie single that never was. This never had a chance. Passed up by Parlophone for a physical release in the UK, passed up by EMI in Germany and even passed up by our own Mushroom/Warner Music in Australia, the Freemasons remix of 'The One' in both single and club guises was without down one of the most glorious Kylie club anthems in the history of Kylie club anthems. It is completely criminal that a physical single of this was never released.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN : WALKING ON A DREAM It's been on the charts for months and has been spreading it's wings internationally, especially in the UK where they actually GET it. Already on rotation on some UK radio stations, EMI UK was so excited by this project that they are rush releasing the album in February. One of the cleverest pieces of Australian pOp music in recent years, the video clip alone is worth the price of admission. Let's hope the UK comes to their senses and puts an enhanced video on the single.

GABRIELLA CILMI : SWEET ABOUT ME It was a particularly big year for young Melburnian Gabriella Cilmi, with this single hitting No.1 down under and bumping itself into top tens the world over. The song in itself was so powerful that blinded by it's success, ARIA voting panellists decided that the album must be good too - good enough to vote for continually throughout this year's awards. She picked up six gongs, including 'Single Of The Year' for this.

BRYN CHRISTOPHER : SMILIN' One of this year's best newcomers, Bryn Christopher's second single was co-written by one of our own in former Idol star Ricki Lee Coulter. It was penned during the UK writing trip for her album 'Brand New Day', but she felt it was too dark to make the final cut. Handballed to Bryn and with new lyrics added, he made it his own. A sublime and classy piece of pOp, which Ricki says just might make it to her next album.

JENNIFER HUDSON : SPOTLIGHT Former American Idol star Jennifer Hudson may end up remembering 2008 for some very different and very tragic reasons, but it was another year of great professional success for the former Oscar winner. Her debut single 'Spotlight' was written by US r&b star Ne-Yo and was a glorious mid-tempo stomper that lyrically dealt with a jealous partner. It was the perfect introduction to Jennifer the recording artist.

KATY PERRY : I KISSED A GIRL Whether you love or loathe Katy Perry, you can't deny that this single was without doubt the most talked about of the year. It was insanely catchy, was a little bit naughty, and went on to sell more than two and a half million copies in the US alone. It went to No.1 in practically every single country throughout the world, even topping charts in Israel. Not so much a chart hit, but a global phenomenon - and we were taking notice.

ROISIN MURPHY : YOU KNOW ME BETTER Without a shadow of a doubt one of the kookiest people in pOp, Ms Murphy had us dancing in the aisles during her Aussie tour earlier this year and after the pOp brilliance of 'Overpowered' and 'Let Me Know' in 2007 came single No.3 from her 'Overpowered' set, 'You Know Me Better'. Catchier than hayfever in springtime, 'You Know Me Better' continued Roisin's record of producing some of the classiest pOp music on the planet. Apparently, we won't have to wait long for solo album No.3 - it's reportedly already in production.

SAM SPARRO : 21ST CENTURY LIFE Mister Sparro might have scored our pOp single of the year with his breakthrough hit 'Black And Gold', but the follow-up single '21st Century Life' also deserves a mention for it's pure, out and out pOp goodness. It was '80s inspired, up-tempo sparkly pOp perfection and ought to have also been a big hit - if it hadn't been for the fact it's predecessor just wouldn't go away.

TOP ALBUMS OF 2008 (RUNNERS UP)

So we've applauded those albums that we feel were the five best and most exciting releases of 2008, but what of those that came so damned close? Well here are those that we felt most certainly deserved a mention due to their amazing impact on planet pOp in 2008;

LADY GAGA : THE FAME We mentioned at the time that we believed the debut of Lady Gaga to be the emergence of a talent who'll be around in years to come - so self-assured is the US pOpstar that she impressed everyone with her performances, her TV glasses, her lightning bolt make-up and sassy attitude when she visited earlier this year. Her live performances alongside The Pussycat Dolls in 2009 will be ones to watch.

GIRLS ALOUD : OUT OF CONTROL This British female quintet continues to impress with their familiar blend of up-tempo pOp, and this, their fifth studio album, most certainly didn't disappoint. They're massive in their native UK, but why in the world hasn't Australia been beguiled by their charms? Probably because their Aussie record label continues to ignore them. One only needs to see their live 'Tangled Up' tour DVD to see this is an enormous mistake.

THE SATURDAYS : CHASING LIGHTS Launching on the back of their Girls Aloud tour support slot, this all new five piece, featuring more than one former S Club 8 star, impressed with deliciously catchy singles in 'If This Is Love' and 'Up'. Their debut album too was polished pOp, though the choice for single No.3 still leaves us scratching our heads. Will they unleash album No.2 in 2009? Who knows, but let's hope the future remains bright for The Saturdays.

GOLDFRAPP : THE SEVENTH TREE Huge props must go to Alison Goldfrapp and co. for releasing one of the most delightful albums of 2008, one that grew on us with each and every listen. Who could forget the infectious single 'Happiness', or the gloriously understated 'A&E'. Although the album wasn't for everyone, particularly those who'd grown to love the electro leanings of their previous album 'Supernature'. Truly sublime - and one we keep going back to.

BRITNEY SPEARS : CIRCUS After shaving her head, dropping her kids and brandishing umbrellas at paparazzi snappers, Britney finally got her life back on track in 2008 and after doing so managed to bag herself a hit record in the process. Though Britney clearly had not much to do with the disc (writing/producing etc all done thanks to outsiders), it was a polished pOp record that spawned two top ten hits. Let's hope she can keep the momentum going in 2009.

JESSICA MAUBOY : BEEN WAITING Got to hand it to Ms Mauboy - she's managed to shake off the 'Young Diva' tag in 2008 by roping in rap superstar Flo Rida for her debut solo effort. It narrowly missed the No.1 position, while her second single 'Burn' is Rihanna-esque pOp that would be a sure-fire No.1 if it was from the Barbadian singer. There are some other pOp gems on this album and it's so polished and international in it's sound, if you listened to it without knowing who it was belting out the tracks, you'd swear it was from the US. Only the Cyndi cover version make us groan.

THE PRESETS : APOCALYPSO Winners of the ARIA Awards for the best dance release, best group and album of the year, The Presets showed the world that we Aussies could do dance/pOp as well, if not better, than the rest of the world. And the world took notice. Singles 'My People', 'Talk Like That' and the phenomenal 'This Boy's In Love' were truly a sign that The Presets' time has most definitely arrived.

KATE MILLER-HEIDKE : CURIOUSER Little Miss Kate has always been a little 'Curiouser', if not downright potty at times, but her latest album was a delightful cornucopia of varied pOp ditties laced with Kate's trademark lyrical honesty. 'Can't Shake It' was an awesome up-tempo taster of what to expect, 'Caught In The Crowd' is sweet, raw and divine and don't even get us started on the desperately good artwork.

HOLLIE SMITH : LONG PLAYER We're so damned glad we discovered this album by New Zealand's first sister of soul Hollie Smith - it is indeed a revelation. Hollie's soulful vocals left us completely spellbound as she purred over first single 'Philosophy', and we basked in the warmth created by the album's ten sublime offerings. If you're a fan of pure, out and out soul music, get behind Ms Hollie Smith - she's utterly divine.

KEANE : PERFECT SYMMETRY Big props to Tom and the lads from Keane for their stellar new album 'Perfect Symmetry'. Like all good bands these days, they offered first single 'Spiralling' as a free download from their website, following it up with 'The Lovers Are Losing' and the title track as subsequent singles. But they deserve kudos for experimenting with their sound in an age where most bands just get hopelessly bogged down recreating the one sound that made them big in the first place.

WILL YOUNG : LET IT GO 'Let It Go' was a much more honest and mature offering from the former Idol superstar - it brought us the classic ballad 'Changes' and followed up in early December with second single 'Grace'. The album was also rather personal, dealing with the breakdown of Will's long term relationship. The album hit the No.2 position on the UK charts, but single No.1 JUST scraped into the top ten. Whether there's a third single from the album is yet to be determined, but we'll keep on supporting Willy pOp in 2009.

CUT COPY : IN GHOST COLOURS And finally, here's another Aussie dance act that made good things happen in 2008, thanks largely to their brand new album 'In Ghost Colours'. Featuring dancefloor anthems 'Lights And Music', 'Hearts On Fire' and 'Faraway', Cut Copy continues to impress globally with their high production values, classic melodies and purely great pOp songs.

OUR TOP FIVE SINGLES FOR 2008; NO.1

We've already given this person a nod for one of the best pOp albums of 2008, so there's no way we'd be overlooking him for a piece of pOp brilliance like this, the track that took him from relative obscurity to global success with a driving beat, electro leanings and the most sparkling LED vest you're ever likely to see.
And though the guy who's getting the gong for pOp single of the year is an expat Aussie, we're still more than happy to claim him as our own, particularly when he belts out pOp gems like this;

No.1 - SAM SPARRO : BLACK AND GOLD

Right from the fade-in opening of the track, as it builds into a now all-too-familiar driving bassline and Sam's velvety vocals, you know this track is one that will connect with people the world over. pOp newcomer Sam Sparro, a former Sydney-sider, tells that the song is about God and believing in a higher power, "I look up into the night sky and see a thousand eyes staring back, but all around these golden beacons I see nothing but black". And don't get us started on that video, where he arrives in a black stretch before turning on his pOp masterstroke - an LED lit vest. Genius. If we were to believe in a higher pOp power, we think that in 2008 we found him - and we're now most definitely disciples of the all powerful, so soulful, Mister Sam Sparro.

OUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS FOR 2008; NO.1

Our No.1 album for 2008 had everything going for it - it came completely by surprise from New Zealand via the UK, bubbled with some of the finest pOp on the planet, tight production, edgy vocals, inspired lyrics and familiar sounds. It was a most welcome addition to the old CD collection in September this year.

No.1 - LADYHAWKE : LADYHAWKE

We can not for the life of us fathom why Pip Brown wasn't given any love on local radio - the singles released from the Ladyhawke album 'Paris Is Burning', 'Dusk 'Til Dawn' and 'My Delirium' were all modern day pOp classics and deserved to be heard. Thankfully, the buzz about Ladyhawke garnered her a cult following and had people clammering for tickets to see her live performances (including at tonight's sell-out Pyramid Rock Festival on Phillip Island in Victoria). 'Ladyhawke' the album was most 'now' in it's sound, but drew on Pip's childhood influences ranging from Fleetwood Mac to Pat Benatar. We reckon we summed 'Ladyhawke' the album up best in our September review of the album; "Epic, brilliant, soulful, edgy, inspired, genius, intelligent, must-have pOp". Amen to that - our No.1 album for the year. Pip, it's yours.

INFERNAL : Electric Light

Danish pOpsters Infernal are back with another single from their new album 'Electric Cabaret' and it seems that this time, they have global domination in their sights. The clip opens in your average, run-o-the-mill supermarket, with your average, run-o-the-mill shoppers buying your average, run-o-the-mill consumables, but there's something lurking in the aisles that's gonna stop them in their tracks. Yes, it's Paw and Lina, and they've popped down to the local supermarket to shoot their latest video and let's face it, they're probably a little overdressed to do their grocery shopping. But instead of slapping one bulging packet after one bulging packet into their baskets, they're more content to walk the catwalk down aisle five. The track itself is proof once again that Europe's most certainly where it's at for pOp these days.

BEYONCE : Diva

Just as she did with the first tracks from 'I Am... Sasha Fierce', it appears Beyonce is hell-bend on taking two more tracks to radio so they can choose which to play. No doubt Sony Music will be taking both 'Diva' and 'Halo' to local radio early in the new year, but with 'Single Ladies' showing no signs of a slowdown in pOpularity at this point in time, they'll have a hard time pushing 'Diva' at radio. The 'Diva' clip again is a classy black and white affair, featuring the superstar in sky-high heels and some completely strange fringed glasses that she surely can't see through. The glasses are rather 'Lady Gaga', the dancing in the clip is all too 'Single Ladies' and for our money, the track is all too tuneless.

ERIC PRYDZ CANCELS

Future Enter-tainment has today confirmed that inter-nationally recognised DJ Eric Prydz has cancelled all his new years Australian engage-ments, citing his fear of flying as the reason for the cancellation. The official press release states that Eric actually boarded the plane - twice in 24 hours - but that his well documented fear of flying caused him to suffer a panic attack in both instances and on both occasions, he left the aircraft before it took off. His management today issued the following statement;
"It is with great regret that we must announce that Eric Prydz has not travelled to Australia. It has been well documented that Eric has had a history of air travel issues and regrettably after having boarded his flight in London he had to unfortunately leave the flight and was unable to re-board.
Another flight was then re-booked for the following day but again after boarding the flight, a panic attack ensued and he again had to leave the airplane, it was later decided to abort the tour. This is huge disappointment for all concerned, especially Eric and he sincerely apologises to all fans and ticketholders of his scheduled events.
We can only apologise to Future Entertainment who have done everything in their power to make these shows possible and have been nothing less than professional throughout."
His appearances at Field Day, Summadayze, Summafieldayze, Brown Alley and tomorrow night's Shore Thing event in Sydney are therefore cancelled.

CAT EMPIRE LIVE HITS RETAIL AND THE ROAD

For those among us who just can't get enough of Aussie umpteen-piece outfit The Cat Empire in live mode, 2009 is going to be a particularly good year. Not only will the band release a brand new 2DVD set and a new live album in February, but the band is taking to the road once again in celebration of their release.
The CD, 'Live On Earth' features in excess of 20 tracks, recorded at the band's live gigs all around the world, from London, Sydney, Paris, New York and Montreal to the band's home turf in Melbourne, all remastered to perfectly encapsulate the band's live experience.
The DVD, 'Live At The Bowl' was filmed at Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl and features a full-length live concert, while a second disc allows you to join the band backstage at the concert and provides glimpses of some rarely seen highlights of the band's history.
And if the releases weren't enough to tempt you, The Cat Empire is embarking on a national tour throughout February and March, taking in dates in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT.

February 26 : Wollongong (UNI Hall)
February 27 : Sydney (The Enmore Theatre)
March 01 : Canberra (The Royal Theatre)
March 05 : Fremantle (Fremantle Arts Centre)
March 06 : Fremantle (Fremantle Arts Centre)
March 07 : Busselton (Old Broadwater Farm)
March 08 : Adelaide (WOMAD Festival)
March 12 : Brisbane (The Tivoli)
March 15 : Caloundra (Caloundra RSL)
March 19 : Moorooduc (The Peninsula Lounge)
March 20 : Melbourne (The Forum Theatre)
March 22 : Tasmania (Morilla Winery)

OUR TOP FIVE SINGLES FOR 2008; NO.2

Bands these days are doing everything in their power to make sure that sales of their CDs continue in the wake of all the illegal downloading, so much so that Coldplay decided that giving away a track from their latest album 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' and performing a couple of free shows was a great way to get in good with their fans. And it worked too - the album sold in bucketloads on it's release in June, with more than 300,000 copies sold in one day in the US and more than 300,000 copies in it's first three days in Britain. But it was the album's second single that was destined to become a modern-day classic.

No.2 - COLDPLAY : VIVA LA VIDA

Translating as 'Live The Life', Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' swept the world with it's uplifting sound and messages of power lost.
It was about the dizzying highs, contrasting with devastating lows, albeit with a powerful melody and the band's clever lyrics. It has us singing along, playing it over and over again on our iPods and stereos, we bought the album, paid money to go and see them live in '09, bought the album again (and the EP) and made us realise just why Chris Martin and company truly are one of the biggest bands in the world.

OUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS FOR 2008; NO.2

Every now and again, an artist comes along that is so ripe and ready for global super stardom, they completely slap you across the face with their powerful production, soulful voice and clever lyrics - and our No.2 album of the year had it all - awesome vocals, a myriad of sexy pOp anthems and a shiny pOp singer who's virtually guaranteed of longevity on this amazing planet pOp of ours.

No.2 - SAM SPARRO : SAM SPARRO

Without a shadow of a doubt, Sam Sparro was the hottest new male performer on the planet in 2008. With his amazing songwriting skills, pOp star attitude and deep, soulful vocals, we believe Sam was completely and utterly robbed at this year's ARIA Awards. He deserved at least one or two gongs for his extraordinary work. His self-titled debut was brimming with pOp gems, from the genius 'Black And Gold' to the pOptastic '21st Century Life' and the Prince-esque '80s influenced 'Clingwrap', all with his sweet-as-honey voice that has the ability to soar from the deepest depths to falsetto highs with ease. 2008 even saw him cleverly covering Estelle's 'American Boy', twisting it with such gender-bending brilliance, not even seasoned gays like Mister Michael or Mister John would dare attempt same. With Sam Sparro, we know we've witnessed the career birth of one of the most exciting pOp stars in years and we'll be watching his every move in '09 with great interest!

ARI GOLD : Human

Okay, let's get one thing off our chests first before we head further into this review for the clip of new Ari Gold single 'Human'... We think that Ari Gold is one of the finest specimens of man flesh ever to walk the earth. That said, here's a gander at his new video and it's a very artistic affair, resplendent with tubs of glitter, sequins and sparkles. He is, however, being chased through the woods by some sort of furry creature (perhaps it's a bear?) but then along comes a UFO and everything turns a little kaleidoscopic before a couple of gratuitous crotch shots make us realise everything's right in the world.

OUR TOP FIVE SINGLES FOR 2008; NO.3

A song that originally began it's life as a cover version on Radio 1's 'Live Lounge' in 2007 and more than a year later ended up being the UK's fastest selling digital release ever bags our No.3 best single for 2008. Originally a UK hit for Snow Patrol in 2004, in the hands of a former X Factor winner, it became a phenomenon, and one of the most gloriously uplifting ballads you're ever likely to hear.

No.3 - LEONA LEWIS : RUN

When former X Factor winner Leona Lewis performed 'Run' on this year's show, we were all in awe - her version of the former Snow Patrol track was an instant classic. She'd taken an already beautiful song and made it her own, incorporating her trademark soaring vocals and a choir to re-create it as an anthemic gospel-inspired ballad. Leona's rendition is angelic, allowing her to fully showcase her powerhouse vocal and move the listener in a way that few other songs have in the past year. It more than deserves our No.3 spot on our top five singles of 2008.

OUR TOP FIVE ALBUMS FOR 2008; NO.3

Sometimes (and rather rarely), something unexpected comes along in your world that simply takes your breath away - and that's precisely what happened for us in 2008. Made up of two gentlemen from two different Aussie music groups, the buzz surrounding this band throughout the world is deafening - and we reckon it's only going to be a matter of time before they're in the upper echelons of charts the world over.

No.3 - EMPIRE OF THE SUN : WALKING ON A DREAM

Who would've thought it - take Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore from Pnau, put them together in a room and something as glorious and unexpectedly brilliant as 'Empire Of The Sun' would result. The first single (and title track) from the album was a moderate chart hit, though it's still hovering in the 20s after 17 weeks, and was accompanied by one of the most spectacular Australian video clips you're ever likely to see. The whole album was quite the revelation from possibly one of the most unlikely collaborations in Aussie pOp music, with it's sweet electro leanings, superb art direction and oh-so-tomorrow sound. It's no wonder then that the buzz for this 'it' band has forced EMI's UK arm to push forward it's British release to February. 'Walking On A Dream' is quite possibly the cleverest piece of Australian pOp we heard all year and you're practically guaranteed to be hearing more from these boys in 2009.

MUSIC AT THE OPEN

Organisers of next year's Australian Open tennis grand slam in Melbourne are hoping to have delivered some kind of musical grand slam at the same event, with a who's who of Australian music lined up to play throughout the fourteen day event. The 'A Day On The Baseline' events on January 31 and February 01 will feature some of the best in local talent, with performances from Evermore, The Cat Empire and Gabriella Cilmi. A double-bill concert will take place at Hisense Arena (formerly Vodafone Arena) on each day, with Pete Murray and Evermore on Jan 31 and Gabriella Cilmi and The Cat Empire on Feb 01, both at 5pm. Meanwhile, highly respected DJs Grant Smillie and John Course will be among those playing for revellers in the Spiegelworld and a series of 'Open Late' concerts in the same venue from January 22 will feature performances from Diesel, Clare Bowditch, Renee Geyer and Tex Perkins. In the Heineken Garden, punters will be entertained by the likes of Mental As Anything, Vanessa Amorosi, Mahalia Barnes, Lowrider and Daryl Braithwaite, while a series of Spiegelworld Garden Stage concerts will feature Bobby Flynn, Hercules In NY and Paris Wells among many others.
For more information regarding performance times and/or ticketing information, head to the official AUSTRALIAN OPEN WEBSITE.

CHRIS CORNELL : Scream

Former vocallist with rock outfits Sound-garden and Audioslave Chris Cornell will release his third solo effort 'Scream' in Australia on March 07 and the video for the first single from it has hit the net - and for the most part it's a surprisingly mellow affair, blending Chris's rockstar vocals with an almost r&b backbeat.
The clip? Chris and his not-too-impressed girlfriend are driving* down a city street, his girlfriend clearly unimpressed about something "we should've taken the town car!!" etc etc, a situation only exacerbated when the convertible breaks down atop a nearby hill. The verbal assault from his girlfriend doesn't end when they reach the safe haven of home - but by this time, Chris is a bit sick of it all - he puts his headphones on and pretends he can't hear. He decides to escape to the local art gallery 'cause he suspects it'll be nice and quiet in there. Sadly, no. There are screaming kids surrounding him and just when he thinks things can't get any worse, his girlfriend also turns up to continue her barrage. This young lady clearly has issues - and for the singer's sanity, we turn to the words of the great Gretel Killeen, "it's time to go.... Chris".
* they're not really driving, they've got a blue screen behind them

CHART WATCH

Well here we go - it's the final ARIA charts for 2008, meaning that every one of the No.1s on the chart this week are also the first No.1s of 2009! So for the last time in 2008, here's the weekly run-down on what's happening on this week's Official ARIA Charts.
SINGLES : It will be new US superstar Lady Gaga who takes us into the new year atop the Australian singles chart with second single 'Poker Face', remaining steady after her return to the top last weekend. Moving ever closer to the top spot this week is the Ian Carey Project, 'Get Shaky' proving to be the dance hit of the summer, hitting a new high of No.5, replacing Kings Of Leon, who drop one place. Katy Perry is up four places to No.10 with her single 'Hot 'N' Cold' refusing to go away, while Jessica Mauboy moves up to No.13 with second single 'Burn'. Rihanna's 'Rehab' moves up six to No.26, Metro Station moves into the top 50 with 'Seventeen Forever' (No.43) and Sam Sparro's megahit 'Black And Gold' refuses to die - it's back in at No.50.
DIGITAL TRACKS : The second single from Britney's new album 'Circus' moves one step closer to the No.1 position this week digitally - it's in there at No.2 behind Lady Gaga, but because there's no physical single 'til the new year, the digital sales aren't enough to take it into the top five on the combined (and official) chart. Katy Perry found favour over the festive season, back up to No.8 (up three places) with 'Hot 'N' Cold', back into the chart at No.36 with 'I Kissed A Girl' and debuting in the chart at No.39 with third single 'One Of The Boys'.
PHYSICAL SINGLES : The top ten is pretty much the same this week, albeit with a couple of changes within it. Just outside it, Vanessa Amorosi's megahit 'Perfect' smashes it's way back into the chart at No.18 and further down, Billy Joel gets the only debut with 'Christmas In Fallujah' hitting the dizzying heights of No.46.
ALBUMS : 2009 looks like it will also be bathed in Pink, with the US singer staying put on top of the official ARIA albums chart this week. Further down, Lady Gaga moves up to No.5, the 'Packed To The Rafters' soundtrack moves into the top ten to the No.7 position and Human Nature score another top ten album with 'Symphony Of Hits' hitting the No.10 position. The Priests move up to No.12 following a rash of television advertising, while fans of Fall Out Boy desert the stores in droves, their album down from No.9 to No.19. There are also nine place chart drops from Andre Rieu and Josh Groban. One thing that will be incredibly satisfying for the record companies and artists, however, is that apart from just seven of the top 50 albums, all of them have scored sales of 35,000 copies or more.
